8 districts in State without DTC
Union Govt plan to eliminate TB

Early Times Report
JAMMU, Mar 23: Prime Minister Narendra Modi launched TB-free India Campaign to eliminate tuberculosis the deadly disease by 2025 but State Health Ministry seems least bothered to control the disease in the state as eight districts of Jammu and Kashmir were without District Tuberculosis Centres for last more than 10 years.
The eight districts include Bandipore, Shopian, Kulgam and Ganderbal in Kashmir province and Samba, Kishtwar, Ramban and Reasi in Jammu province.
Sources informed that the patients of far flung areas are being forced to travel long distances to reach the DTC for collecting the TB medicines or examine their sputum due to unavailability of the centres in above said districts, which coerces them to leave the treatment midway without informing anyone.
Even the existing centres are facing shortage of the staff despite repeated reminders sent to the concerned authorities. With the less staff, the initiative of Union Government to eliminate the TB in the country is being defeated, sources added.
Sources stated that a DCT registers more than 500 cases annually but due to insufficient manpower, well equipped laboratory, and other facilities; the state has failed to control TB in the State.
An official, seeking anonymity, told that insufficient infrastructure has been creating problem for the patients. The issue had taken up with concerned higher authorities' number of times but nothing has been done so far.
