Movement of heavy vehicles makes Akhnoor bridge vulnerable to accidents

Jammu, Apr 1: The uninterrupted movement of heavy vehicles on the already structurally vulnerable bridge at Akhnoor is further deteriorating it.
According to reports, the bridge was handed over to J&K Police for management of vehicular Traffic after and it was also declared that movement of heavy vehicles are not allowed on the it from 9 am to 5 pm, but it continues to best the burden of heavy vehicles that too on both sides.
"The bridge was taken from army and was handed over to police for the management of traffic and new bridge for both way movement of traffic was also started," said sources. They said that the bridge at present is over burdened with heavy vehicles, even when it has been already declared structurally weak.
"When the bridge was under army's control, it was regularly maintained, but since it has been taken over by police, no such maintenance has been done," said sources adding that police has no mechanism for the maintenance of the bridge.
They further maintained that since the new bridge was established to reduce pressure in this bridge, but due to apathetic approach of concerned authorities, the bridge is becoming vulnerable. Sources however accused the concerned police for the present mess on the bridge.
"Due to inept approach of police, heavy vehicles are allowed to move on the bridge," said sources. If sources are to be believed smugglers of wood, narcotics etc fearing of being catching divert their vehicles towards old bridge as the nakas on the end of the new bridge towards Jammu side is are very alert.
