Early Times Report

Srinagar, Apr 2: On Sunday morning, Ghulam Mohammad, (name changed) was sitting at his home when he received a call that he has to come hospital to ferry the injured. Amid clashes, he drove the car to hospital. But on way he was stopped at several places by protesters and several stones also hit the vehicles.
"We just do our duties but are not allowed to ferry patients or injured to hospitals," Mohammad said. "We are putting our lives at risk but we are caught in clashes," he said.
"We (ambulance drivers) become easy target for the protesters in Kashmir. During 2016 unrest, scores of ambulances were damaged of the SMHS hospital by protesters. Many drivers were beaten up ruthlessly," an ambulance driver said, wishing not to be quoted by name. "We neither are part of protests nor the forces. Ferrying patients to hospitals has become dangerous for us," he added.
The ambulances drivers have been seeking risk allowances for them.
An ambulance driver of a district hospital of south Kashmir said protesters attacked him several times on the way to Srinagar in the past.
"The windscreen of ambulances are always damaged by people," said another ambulance driver.
"The ambulances are meant for everyone including security personnel, militants or civilians. Our job is to ferry patients to hospitals," he said. He appealed forces and protesters to stop targeting ambulances and give them safer passage during any disturbance.
This is not for the first time when an ambulance driver was harassed by the protesters.
There are some videos that went viral on the social media, which showed that protesters at some places target the ambulances.
A senior official said the ambulances are ferrying patients to hospitals and should not be "harassed or attacked". "Strict directions have already issued to security personnel not to stop ambulances and should be given free passage to move everywhere," he said. "But who will tell protesters to stop attacking ambulances. They are not listening to anybody," he added.
