Cabinet reshuffle on cards ahead of Darbar Move
2 top PDP ministers in race for Edu portfolio; Bukhari to retain Finance
4/3/2018 1:41:48 AM
Early Times Report
Srinagar, Apr 2: A reshuffle in the state cabinet is in the offing, with two senior PDP ministers in the race for grabbing the vital portfolio of Education.
Sources privy to the development divulged that ahead of the commencement of the annual Darbar Move from Jammu to Srinagar scheduled by the end of this month, the government is all set to change the portfolio of some of its senior ministers.
There are reports that two ministers are in the fray for getting the portfolio of Education as Altaf Bukhari who was holding it was accorded the additional portfolio of Finance.
After Haseeb Drabu was sacked by Chief Minister Mehbooba Mufti over his ‘controversial’ remarks on Kashmir, Bukhari was given the portfolio of Finance in addition to his own Education ministry.
However, there are discussions taking place within the ruling camp that the portfolio of Education should be accorded to some other minister as it would be difficult for Bukhari to retain two vital portfolios.
Therefore, the names of two PDP ministers is topping the list and amongst them one will get the Education while as Finance will remain exclusively with Bukhari. “It is going to be a vital development as the interesting situation has emerged in the collation. It is to be seen who will be given such a vital portfolio and whose fate will be kept in limbo,” sources said, adding that both the ministers had earlier expressed grievance over being given less important ministries.
It was informed that during the cabinet reshuffle witnessed in February last year, the two ministers of the PDP had refused to join offices. They had, as per reports, expressed reservations, stating that they have been accorded such ministries that carry least public dealing. However, after though deliberations, discussions and confabulations with them, the duo reluctantly re-joined their offices.
However, there were reports that whenever the reshuffle takes place, the two disgruntled voices will be pacified and their woes addressed by the Chief Minister Mehbooba Mufti.
Meanwhile, over a year has passed since the two had pitched for the change in their ministries and this month it is most likely that one amongst them will heave a sigh of relief.
“Both the ministers are important for the PDP and it would be a tightrope walk to choose between the two. So far, there hasn’t been any consensus evolved over the issue and it is still a 50:50 chance for both of them,” says a functionary privy to the latest development over the issue.
He said there are also chances that the BJP would also make some changes in its cabinet portfolios in the government with chances of few new faces being inducted widely speculated.
Earlier, there were also reports that the PDP too is deliberating over to drop any minister in the canine and induct any new face. However, so far there aren’t any decisive measures taken in this regard by the party leadership.
