Promotions, positions for influential teacher post retirement
Furious academicians threaten agitation
4/3/2018 12:31:23 AM
Early Times Report
SRINAGAR, Apr 2: The post-retirement promotion of a former Associate Professor Mathematics to the post of Director, J&K Institute of Mathematical Sciences, Srinagar has stirred proverbial horonet's nest in the academic circles here, with everybody asking what is so special about the 'choice'?
Academicians in Higher Education Department term the government order No: 221-HE of 2018, dated, 28-03-2018 as demonstrative of the brazenness of the concerned authorities.
The impugned order ironically reads: "In the interest of administration and to facilitate smooth functioning of newly established Jammu & Kashmir Institute of Mathematical Sciences (JKIMS) Srinagar, sanction is accorded to the engagement of said Associate Professor, I/C Director, JKIMS, who is retiring on 31-03-2018, as Director, JKIMS, Srinagar for a period of two years w.e.f 01-04-2018, with the terms and conditions applicable to such engagements issued by government from time to time."
To cover-up its impropriety and to afford it some credibility to the order, "issued with the prior approval of the Chairperson, Executive Council, JKIMS (Hon'ble Chief Minister, J&K)" has been added to it like a post-script.
The academicians have questioned the appointment saying that the appointee neither possesses merit nor suitability for the post. Adding that she is grossly under-qualified and lacking experience for the post adding that out of her 02 years I/C Director JKIMS, she was away on leave in US since long.
The academicians argue that the JKIMS is supposed to be a centre of excellence for studies and research in mathematical sciences where students could pursue studies and research leading to the award of M.Sc, Ph.D and even conduct post doctoral research, so how can a person with just MA Mathematics without any credible research publication to her credit, head a team of scientists and teachers with much higher qualifications and published research papers to their credit?
A group of university teachers talking to Early Times on the condition of anonymity today alleged that the only 'qualification' of the appointee is that she is a relative of a powerful minister from his in-laws' side.
They appealed the Chief Minister, who is Chairperson of the Executive Council of JKIMS, to review her decision which "otherwise would mean writing an obituary of the would be prestigious institute before its take off."
The group of teachers also appealed the Governor NN Vohra to intervene in the matter.
