SRINAGAR, Oct 5: National Conference President, Dr. Farooq Abdullah and Vice-President Omar Abdullah today gave a new twist to the killing of their two party workers in an area of downtown Srinagar.
Both Dr. Abdullah and Omar demanded a probe in the incident saying that same would settle the nerves of party workers since it has decided not to contest upcoming local body polls in the state. Omar in a clandestine manner accused the present dispensation of playing with the lives of NC leaders and workers by removing security cover from them. He said that there seems to be a design in the killing of NC workers.
Dr. Abdullah condemned the cowardly, barbaric killing of its two party functionaries Mushtaq Ahmad Wani and Nazir Ahmad Bhat in the Habba Kadal locality of Srinagar. "People who have committed this dastardly act have no humanity. I empathize with the bereaved families and hope they overcome this trauma that has shattered their lives forever," said the NC President.
Dr. Abdullah while expressing anguish said that the party had already decided not to participate in the ongoing ULB and Panchayat polls and that such attack on NC workers must be thoroughly probed. "We demand high level, time bound, impartial probe into the incident. The guilty must not be spared," he said.
Party vice president Omar Abdullah while condemning the brutal attack said that he is shocked beyond words adding that it is an act of 'terrorism' and a ploy to stifle the voice of the party. He said the 'appalling' security situation has gone out of the hands of governor's administration.
"The incumbent administration had already removed security from some of our functionaries, all this needs to be unearthed and brought before people. There seems to be some sort of a design into the killings of our party men today and it is up to the investigating agencies to identify the killers and bring them to justice. The killings are taking place in broad day light and that too in an urban heart. We expect that the governor moves its men and machinery to ensure justice is done swiftly," said Omar.
Omar visited Police Control Room Srinagar where the bodies of Mushtaq and Nazir were kept and expressed sympathies with the bereaved families there.
The party has clarified that the assassinated NC workers had no involvement in the ongoing ULB polls. "All reports attributing to them as candidates in the ongoing ULB polls are false and are being circulated with a malicious intent," party spokesperson Imran Nabi Dar said.
It would be in place to mention here that two workers of NC were shot dead and another was injured after attacked by unknown gunmen probably militants in Karfali Mohalla area of Srinagar city.
Reports said that unknown gunmen attacked at least three close aides of NC MLA for Habba Kadal Shameem Firdous at Karfali Mohalla in downtown Srinagar. In the incident, the three activists suffered injuries and were shifted to Shri Maharaja Hari Singh (SMHS) hospital for treatment.
Mushtaq Ahmad Wani and Nazir Ahmad Bhat succumbed on way to the hospital while as the condition of Shakeel Ahmad is said to be stable in the hospital. While Nazir was resident of Pamposh Colony, Noorbagh, Mushtaq was a resident of Karfali Mohalla.
Senior police officers including Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Srinagar, Imtiyaz Ismail reached the spot and took stock of the situation.
A police spokesperson in a statement said that in the incident three civilians sustained injuries and were evacuated to nearby hospital for medical attention.
However, two of the civilians succumbed to their injuries. They were identified as Nazir Ahmad son of Ghulam Mohammad Wani resident of Pamposh Colony, Noorbagh and Mushtaq Ahmad son of Ghulam Mohammad Bhat resident of Kani Kadal. Another injured civilian Shakeel Ahmad is stated to be stable, the spokesman said.
The spokesman said that police has registered a case and initiated the investigation into the instant matter.
