State short of 1,757 health institutions | | | Early Times Report Jammu, Apr 4: Though Chief Minister Omar Abdullah has been claiming 'revolution' in health delivery system in Jammu and Kashmir under his rule, but state is still facing shortage of 1,757 health institutions. Sources informed that against a total requirement of 4,747 health institutions, including District Hospitals, Community Health Centers (CHCs), Primary Health Centers (PHCs), Health Sub-Centers (HSCs) the state has only 2990, thus being short of 1,757 institutions at various levels. The deficiency data of institutions is based on the population norms which show the poor health care facilities in the state but a proposal for upgrading 106 health centres is still pending with Planning and Development Department for approval Further exposing the claims of government, manpower shortage has delayed the opening up 676 new sub centers, sanctioned by the Union Ministry for Health under centrally sponsored National Rural Health Mission (NRHM). A House Committee constituted by the Legislative Assembly under the Chairmanship of MLA Dr. Mustafa Kamal had also expressed its serious concern over the shortage of health centres especially in rural areas of the militancy affected state and has recommended special focus to fill the gap. As per the data submitted by the government in Legislative Assembly under National Rural Health Mission (NRHM), a proposal to established 676 new sub-centres in the state based on the principle of 'Time to Care', half an hour travel distance on foot from the habitation to the sub-centre has been sanctioned by Union Ministry of Health and Family Welfare. |
