Setback for Congress-National Conference coalition as Congress workers, activists decide not to support for alliance candidate | | | Jehangir Rashid SRINAGAR, Apr 4: In what could be a setback for Dr. Mehboob Beigh, National Conference-Congress coalition candidate in the Lok Sabha elections for Anantnag parliamentary seat, the Congress workers and activists in two South Kashmir seats have decided not to vote for him. Sources told Early Times that Congress workers and activists of Dooru and Kokernag constituencies in South Kashmir have decided to remain away from supporting Dr. Beigh in the upcoming Lok Sabha elections. They said that some of the Congress workers and activists have even decided to carry out a campaign against the coalition candidate. "Most of the people of the South Kashmir are quite upset that Dr. Beigh who is the sitting Lok Sabha member has seldom visited his constituency. This has caused serious heartburns among the people of the four districts of South Kashmir and they want to teach the National Conference-Congress coalition candidate," said sources. Sources said that some of the Panches and Sarpanches owing allegiance to Congress party recently revolted during a meeting convened in order to garner the support for Dr. Beigh. They said that Panches and Sarpanches made it clear that they will not listen to the directive of supporting the coalition candidate. "Minister for Tourism, Ghulam Ahmad Mir recently convened a meeting of Congress backed Panches and Sarpanches in order to formulate strategy for ensuring support to Dr. Mehboob Beigh. However, he faced revolt during the meeting with Sarpanches and Panches making it clear that they won't support the coalition candidate," said sources. Sources said majority of the Sarpanches and Panches left the meeting in a jiffy while raising serious reservations over the decision of Congress High Command not to field its own candidate from South Kashmir for the Lok Sabha polls. The Sarpanches and Panches told Mir that they will neither support Dr. Beigh on voting day nor carry out campaign in his favour. "Mir tried his best to motivate the Sarpanches and Panches who were all fire against the National Conference-Congress coalition candidate. He tried to pacify the Sarpanches and Panches by saying that vote for Dr. Beigh should be considered as a vote for him, but that was not to be. The Sarpanches and Panches said that they would not vote for a person who has come before public over the past five years," said sources. Sources said that this development is all set to dent the chances of Dr. Beigh from this constituency with the advantage going to Peoples Democratic Party candidate Mehbooba Mufti. They said that Mehbooba might get a shot in the arm following the decision by Congress workers and activists not to support or vote Dr. Beigh for the Lok Sabha elections from South Kashmir. |
