Will ‘vote BJP, save Jammu’ slogan work? | Testing times ahead for BJP in Jammu | | Kunal Shrivatsa JAMMU, Apr 4: Time and again the Bharatiya Janta Party (BJP) rakes up the issue of discrimination with Jammu region and always presents itself as the 'real saviour' of Jammuites from the 'biased' Kashmiri leadership. And, with the Lok Sabha elections round the corner, the BJP again started to chant the 'pro-Jammu' slogans in a bid to woo the voters of Dogra heartland, however, it would be an uphill task for the saffron party to hoodwink the electorates in this poll. The other day state BJP president and party candidate for Jammu-Poonch parliamentary constituency Jugal Kishore while addressing a series of election meetings in and around Akhnoor appealed the electorate to "Vote BJP to save Jammu," adding that the victory of BJP in Jammu would mean its effective participation in the law making process in the parliament and empowerment of the people of this province. But, it seems that BJP nominee Jugal Kishore forgot that the people of Jammu had given a golden opportunity to his party in the Assembly polls of 2008 wherein as many as eleven candidates of BJP got elected to the Upper House of the State Assembly. It was by far the best performance of the BJP in Jammu province largely due to the confidence exuded in it by the people of Jammu. Jammu people after feeling dejected by the Congress leaders of Jammu region had pinned their hopes on BJP to serve them honestly and to act as their real watchdog in safeguarding their interests but the legislators of the saffron party failed to come up to their expectations as their actions hardly reflected that they are the real voice of Jammuites in and outside the State Assembly. The hopes of Jammu people, who put their weight behind the BJP in 2008 Assembly polls, dashed like nine pins within less than two and a half years when seven of saffron party's MLAs cross voted in favour of National Conference (NC)-Congress candidates for six seats of MLC elections in April 2011. Jammuites, who put their weight behind the BJP in 2008 Assembly polls and made the party candidates victorious in 11 Assembly segments, were left high and dry by the BJP MLAs' action as they felt cheated that the party candidates who earned their votes on the name of opposing NC and Congress cross voted in favour of the candidates of the same parties for MLC election in April 2011. The cross voting by BJP MLAs resulted in victory of National Conference- Congress coalition candidates who romped on five MLC seats out of total six. Pertinently, three of the BJP MLAs voted in favour of the NC candidates while other four voted for their arch rival Congress in violation of the party whip. The 'backstabbing' of seven BJP MLAs led to the defeat of official party candidate Thakur Ranjit Singh since he managed to secure only four BJP votes out of total eleven. Under such circumstances wherein people of Jammu had to taste the bitter pill of open betrayal of the BJP legislators, it would be interesting to see that how the state BJP leadership would convince the voters of Jammu region that they are their true representatives.
