Taxpayers' money pillaged by lifting
vehicles, released on payment
Early Times Report
JAMMU, Mar 4: The resident of old Rehari Mohalla today woke up to a conspicuous morning when most of them saw the mohalla interiors cleansed up of all dirt and slime with lime powder dusted along the lanes, drains and main road, but also to their utter displeasure and disgust that their four wheelers and scooters too have been taken away, obviously by the traffic cops.
The occasion turned to be Chief Minister Omar Abdullah's unusual visit to the locality to meet a NC leader Rampaul, for which the gullible residents had to pay the price.
Nearly 65 vehicles were reported to be lifted from the main road and from the interior of the mohalla in the wee hours in the morning without sounding any clarion call to the owners by the policewallas who later had to get their vehicles released from the Gulshan Grounds after shelling out money to the traffic police department which obviously got richer by nearly Rs 30,000 as money earned from the taxpayers of Jammuites for no fault of theirs.
"I had to shift my ailing mother to the hospital and found my car missing which the policewallas roaming in the mohalla said had been lifted to give Omar hurdle-free transportation to his NC leader's house," said one of the victim and the resident of the mohalla.
Another who had dressed up his child with the new clothing was taking him to the school for the admission had to hire an autorikshaw from far away so that his child may not miss his academics while the Chief Minister had turned the small and congested mohalla into a garrison.
Nearly 30 to 40 Jammu and Kashmir police cops including traffic cops made early morning hay by transporting the vehicles of the residents to the Gulshan Ground as Omar had to visit a NC leader in the mohalla.
This is for the first time in his tenure of six troubled years in the state as CM , that Omar thought of visiting any Mohalla, though for meeting his NC leader alone .
How this visit turned the small area into a garrison with security personnel besides clearing off the mohalla of all vehicles, were seen even stopping the general public movement also from 8 a.m. in the morning till 12 p.m., until Omar had left the scene.
The four hours logjam in the area brought great resentment from the residents of the Mohalla who had turned quite furious over such act of omission committed by the head of the state by holding the men, women and children hostage in the mohalla.
"If he had to come at 11 am, his security personnel had ample time before hand to convey message through loudspeakers in the morning cautioning the residents to move their vehicles to some other place and clear of the area for some time. While the cops went on job evacuating the vehicles at 8 a.m, they could have sounded an alarm," said a resident whose vehicle well taken away.
A scribe of a national daily's vehicle too was not spared by the cops who too had to get it released from Gulshan Ground on the payment of Rs 600.
"While already his political career graph has touched the nadir, such unwarranted shows by him are adding to his woes as the politician and the Chief Minister of the state," said another resident adding spice to his comment saying, "While embarking upon such shows in Mohallas and removing vehicles from the area to be released on the payment, Omar seems to be on a job to swell the state exchequer which is hit hard due to model code of conduct in the state".
