Army to assist police in sensitive areas during polling | | | Early Times Report
Jammu, Apr 16 : Government on Wednesday decided to seek assistance from the Army on a limited scale for preventing militants from disrupting poll process in the remaining four constituencies of Udhampur, Srinagar, Anantnag and Baramulla. Official sources said that there was no need for securing support from the Army in maintaining law and order during pre-poll campaign and polling in Ladakh constituency. According to these sources, some companies of troops may be deployed on the mountain terrain that links Kishtwar with south Kashmir as that has been the conventional route adopted by militants while triggering incidents of violence in Doda-Kishtwar and Anantnag-Pulwama belts. Senior police officers, while referring to a three to four armed strikes by the militants in some areas in Kashmir during the last 10 days, say that these incidents were minor and did not indicate any hike in the activities of militants. According to these officers, additional companies of state police and paramilitary forces have been deployed in various sensitive areas for ensuring incident free polling. Security forces have been directed to carry out frisking of each voter before allowing him or her to enter into the polling booth. In this connection couples of female police officials were to be deployed outside each polling booth for frisking women voters to ensure that no voter carried any explosive inside the polling booth. |
