`Coalition by compulsion, not choice'
4/16/2014 11:51:09 PM

SRINAGAR, Apr 16: Alliance between National Conference and Congress seems to be on papers only as these parties have no understanding on the broader issues. The cracks in the coalition surfaced many a times threatening its end. The coalition is out of the compulsion not out of the choice.
The extension of lease of the Tosa Maidan firing range to the army is a hot issue these days much to the delight of the opportunist politicians. National Conference is trying it's hard to use this issue to get the maximum support in the upcoming elections.
On the other hand Congress has remained tight lipped over the issue sensing its bad effects on poll alliance otherwise anything related to the army is of the national importance to this party. This time they will keep mum to rule out the division among the voters.
"Dr. Farooq is an unpredictable man who in the morning advocates bombing Pakistan and in the evening he says that no solution to Kashmir problem is possible without the involvement of Pakistan,'' said Gazanfar Ali from Srinagar.
National Conference is fully aware of the fact that it has to take dictation from the Congress party since it has made the pre poll alliance with single largest party of the United Progressive Alliance. Statements of National Conference leaders on the lease issue are nothing but a poll plank.
"It is no wonder that the National Conference President dances during the election rallies. He is habitual of that. But what drives him to make to make hue and cry over the Tosa Maidan lease extension issue is beyond the knowledge of every commoner,'' said Aarif Sultan from Beerwah, Budgam.
The ruling coalition partners never enjoyed the healthy relations with each other, making the leaders of both the parties to come against each other openly, whether on the 73rd amendment of the Panchayati Raj or over the issue of the creation of the new administrative units.
Experts opine that Congress will break its silence over the lease issue once the parliamentary elections are over. The bond that is between the two parties is very weak. According to them the two parties are the two extreme ends of the stick.
National Conference is the party of the stunt politicians who create storms with their unorthodox statements. Its leaders like Dr. Mustafa Kamaal at one time say that the accession of Kashmir with India is conditional. On the other day it is held as an inseparable part of the Union of India.
"Issues like lease extension acts as fresh oxygen for the separatists and for the mainstream parties like NC, thus ending all the ideological differences between the two,'' said Hakim Habibullah from Srinagar.
