Jammu, Apr 16: Even as the campaign for Doda-Udhampur Parliamentary seat has come to an end, BJP president Rajnath Singh's assertions for party candidate Dr Jitender Singh's victory on this seat on Tuesday sounded strange, albeit giving ample hints that all was not certainly well with the leaders and cadres of BJP at least for this constituency. Rajnath Singh raised the pitch with his brief yet heavily loaded political speech at Udhampur on the last day of campaign. Before he concluded, he made senior leaders of the state unit to take a pledge of sorts in full public gaze, asking them to say it again and again ..'Party Ko Yeh Seat Jeetni Hi Hai......'.
It was no ordinary assertion and gesture the party's stalwart, president himself made during his whirlwind visit to Udhampur. Sources said his repeated assertions while seeking the attention of couple of senior leaders by name and making it loud and clear for all others present on the dais, to ensure the victory on this constituency has created a flutter afresh in the rank and file of state unit. Rajnath Singh did not say it in any close door meeting instead called the state president Jugal Kishore Sharma, Dr Nirmal Singh and few other leaders by their names and asked them to say what he avowed loudly.....' Aap Sab Log Kahiye .....Ham Yeh Seat Jitanay Kay Liye Har Prayas Karange.....(We will work in direction of ensuring victory for the party candidate at any cost...).
On campaign trail packed with hectic schedule across the country, Rajnath Singh came to Udhampur for a brief visit just for garnering votes for the party candidate. It goes without saying that for the interests of the party he heads at this juncture, his statements, actions and speeches matter to every single worker and leader . It is well understood that all in the state unit including senior leaders know it well that they are expected to work and ensure victory of the party candidate only. What made Rajnath Singh to assert on this and seeking their response amid a public rally has surprised all. However, insiders in the party say this was in the wake of reports that have gone to high command that leaders and functionaries in the party are not working overnight nor putting in their best of efforts the way they did so for Jammu-Poonch seat. While there are reasons which the central leadership knows well as why they are behaving in this manner, it has taken cognizance of some leaders for whom it was a loud message of sorts that this is not acceptable in the larger interests of the party, insiders said.
Sources said even though the campaign has come to an end, by reiterating what he said was to ensure that party leaders pulled up their socks for the polling day as well which it feels was crucial for many reasons. However, whether this was received in that stride by those whom Rajnath Singh wanted to understand it well, remains to be seen. Pertinent to mention is that high command's decision to give ticket to Dr Jitender Singh for this Parliamentary constituency has not augured well with a majority of the leaders in the state unit, besides of course Dr Nirmal Singh, who was the strong aspirant for this seat. |
