Statements of Farooq, Omar on PDP, BJP meaningful
Manifestation of frustration

Rustam
Jammu, Apr 16: On Tuesday, NC president and Union Minister Farooq Abdullah and his son and Chief Minister Omar Abdullah addressed rallies at different places in Kashmir to woo voters. One thing was common in their speeches. They accused the PDP of helping the BJP in Jammu province fielding its candidates from both the Lok Sabha constituencies - Jammu and Udhampur. Farooq Abdullah accused the PDP of having a "nexus with the BJP, he said while addressing an rally at Khansahab (Budgam), adding Mufti Sayeed fielded a "Hindu" face, Yashpal Sharma, for Jammu-Poonch parliamentary constituency against Madan Lal Sharma of Congress "only to divide the votes". "Similarly, he gave mandate to a Muslim face, Arshad Malik, against Congress leader Ghulam Nabi Azad. This was done deliberately to divide the Muslim votes which would ultimately help BJP," he also said. Farooq Abdullah did not stop just there. He charged Mufti Sayeed with having "double-standards". "On one hand he (Mufti) talks of change and on the other, he has forged an alliance with BJP's Prime Ministerial candidate Narendra Modi…The BJP's agenda is to abrogate Article 370 of Indian constitution. I will not allow that till my last breath…The BJP wants our land, not us…The BJP's Prime Ministerial candidate follows divisive politics. If Modi comes to power, he will put entire India in danger because of communal mindset…It is unfortunate that PDP has already joined hands with Modi. That can be gauged from the fact that Shiromani Akali Dal, which is a known ally of BJP, has extended support to PDP," he, in fact, said.
Omar Abdullah went several steps further and tried his level best to give a communal colour to the election campaign while addressing rallies in Pulwama and Shopian district. He accused the PDP of "covertly supporting" and, among other things, said: "These power hungry people (PDP) have stooped to the level of supporting the person responsible for the massacre of Muslims in Gujarat…The PDP is lending support to him (Modi) despite the fact that he is unapologetic of his deeds…Vote for the PDP amounts to voting for the BJP and its Prime Ministerial candidate, Narendra Modi. Modi doesn't wear…By refusing to wear the cap, he has only reinforced the belief that he has an innate sense of prejudice towards Muslims. He (Modi) is fine with wearing a Sikh turban and other head gears across but terms wearing a skull cap as playing politics. This is plain discrimination against the Muslims…The PDP has entered into a secret alliance with the BJP. It is evident from selection of PDP's candidates in Jammu-Poonch and Doda-Udhampur seats".
The statements of the father and son duo on the PDP and the BJP were very meaningful --meaningful in the sense that they acknowledged the presence of the Mufti factor in Jammu province and virtually admitted that the PDP candidates were powerful enough to upset the Congress's applecart in both the constituencies. These statements were meaningful in another sense: The PDP has made inroads in Jammu province at the cost of the NC. Indeed, if one goes by the statements of Farooq Abdullah and Omar Abdullah, then one can say that they have only demoralized the Congress candidate and their supporters. After all, these statements came from those who were at the helm of affairs and who knew which way the wind id blowing in Jammu province. The fact of the matter is that such discouraging and demoralizing statements made only by those who are not confident of victory. Another important fact is that the NC didn't help the Congress in Jammu province in the real sense of the term. It launched campaign for the Congress through those NC leaders who the people of Jammu province don't like.
