Administrative inertia costs state tourism dearly | Project of immense public relevance squandered | | Arun Singh Jammu, Apr 16: At a time when most states are using latest Technology to promote tourism, the State Tourism Department of Jammu and Kashmir has failed to implement an IT project sanctioned by Government of India at the cost of Rs 1 crore in totality even after the lapse of 7 years. Sources told Early Times that Government of India, in 2007, had sanctioned an IT project for upgrading website and to provide IT tools to tourism professionals for marketing and publicizing the tourism products but due to lackluster attitude of the concerned department could not take it to its logical end even after 7 years. They further said that the project was sanctioned by union Government under one condition that half of the total cost of the project had to be contributed by the state Government and in this connection center Government had released Rs 40 lakh to the State Government as first installment. Sources further maintained that the balance central share of Rs 10 lakh was subject to furnishing of utilization certificates for the first release. The project involved procurement of satellite imagery of the State from the National Remote Sensing Agency (NRSA) and creation of a Geographical Information System (GIS) based tourist information network for the convenience of tourists, they added. They said that state Tourism Department except purchasing of software at a cost of Rs 13 lakh and of equipment for Rs 3.44 lakh did nothing towards implementation of this project as a result of which the balance funds received from the center Government continued to remain unutilized. Moreover the software and equipment purchased had also not been put to use till date. |
