UT for Ladakh a poll gimmick: Mufti
'Congress, NC only interested in power'
4/16/2014 11:30:38 PM
Early Times Report
Srinagar, Apr 16: The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) patron, Mufti Mohammad Sayeed has said the opportunistic alliance between National Conference and Congress has nothing in common except the lust for power and that is why both parties tried to mislead the people without caring for the consequences.
Addressing large number of political workers from Kupwara district who joined the party today Mufti said the Congress promise of a union territory for Ladakh in its local manifesto is an election time gimmick which has been introduced for votes but without realizing that it is constitutionally impossible.
More than 400 political workers belonging largely to the Gujjar community, Pahari section and others joined the party today at Mufti's Gupkar residence. Mufti said the NC can't escape its responsibility from the Congress manifesto and it must explain its position as an alliance partner in the UPA.
"On the one hand the NC is shedding crocodile tears about article 370 and preservation of special status of J&K and on the other hand they are trying to dismember the state and take a territory out of it," he said and wondered what kind of a preservation of state's interest the NC is talking about?
He said hoodwinking has been an old tactic of NC to stay in power but it is ridiculous that they still feel that people would trust their word. Mufti said the NC-led government has been making fancy claims about all issues but have not been able to bring relief to a single life in the state except enriching their own selves. He referred to the so-called rehabilitation scheme for those people who had gone across the Line-of-Control (LoC) and said the entire families of the unfortunate men have been deceived and put into all kinds of trouble.
Speaking on the occasion Muzzafar Hussain Baig said NC had exploited all sections of the society but Gujjar community has been the worst victim of its exploitative policies. He said the highly self-respected and innocent community was always used to provide audience for the NC leadership to address public meetings and used their votes to come to power and then abandon them.
That resulted in continued deprivation, illiteracy and backwardness of most members of this community. Baig said if the PDP came to power it would create a ministry specially for the tribal welfare. He said that would ensure that the funds earmarked for the targeted development of this community are utilized in a judicious manner so that they could attain the desired level of development.
He said the Gujjar and Pahari communities have been living in complete harmony with other sections of the society but the fact that they generally reside in remote and hilly areas has prevented the fruits of development reaching them in adequate manner.
