Doda-Udhampur votes today; BJP, Cong locked in straight contest
4/16/2014 11:30:49 PM
Early Times Report
JAMMU, Apr 16: Despite PDP and JKNPP's presence, BJP and Congress are locked in a straight contest on Udhampur-Doda Lok Sabha seat, which is going to polls on Thursday.
Though ex-Chief Minister and Union Minister for Health and Family Welfare Ghulam Nabi Azad continues to maintain supremacy on paper over BJP's diabetician turned politician Dr. Jatinder Singh, the constituency does indicate that polarisation has touched heights and is likely to impact the outcome of the contest. The depth of polarisation can be gauged from the fact that in comparatively communally peaceful part of Doda constituency, BJP has an edge over Congress.
The voters from the minority community make no bones while saying that they would vote for BJP candidate without taking into account the outcome. "We will vote for BJP's PM nominee Narinder Modi. We know Ghulam Nabi Azad is the other candidate but even then, our vote would go to Modi. Congress has fielded Azad despite knowing that wind was not in his favour," said one Ram Singh, who lives in a far-flung area of Doda constituency.
He added that BJP is likely to surprise Congress on Doda-Udhampur seat. A staunch BJP worker from Bijarni in Doda said "Congress tried to play clever by fielding Azad. But it is unlikely to work. We have done our homework well and we are sure of massive swing of vote in our favour." In Udhampur, BJP Leader Pawan Gupta talks of BJP wiping out Congress from Jammu and Kashmir.
"Not only Lok Sabha elections, we would wipe them out in the assembly polls also," said Pawan while adding that Azad should not have contested from Doda-Udhampur. On the contrary, Congress workers maintain that they would win the seat. "Though I cannot say about the margin of victory but Azad sahab would win this seat. There is Modi wave but people know Ghulam Nabi Azad has done a lot for the state and would do more, once he is elected as MP from this seat," said a Congress worker.
He was supported by a NC worker who said "We are finding the ground slipping from BJP. Wave is in our favour and we are going to make it easily. Ghulam Nabi Azad is a towering personality. His victory would be grand. He would leave BJP rattling at the state as well as national level. Our alliance is likely to win both the seats."
Doda-Udhampur has over 14 lakh voters and comprises of 17 Assembly segments. The constituency has been a traditional vote bank of Congress, which has won the seat in most of the elections, except three times. In the previous elections of 2009, Choudhary Lal Singh of Congress defeated BJP candidate Chaman Lal Gupta with nearly 50,000 votes. National Conference had bagged over 69,000 votes and stood at third place followed by JKNPP with over 49,000 votes.
Out of the 17 Assembly segments of the constituency, 8 are presently being held by Congress while 2 are being held by National Conference. The BJP has 4 MLAs in the constituency while the NPP has 2 and the Assembly constituency of Kathua is being represented by an independent candidate.
