Talwara migrants to vote after 16 years

Jammu, Apr 16 : After a gap of 16 years more than 1400 Talwara Migrants will be excercising their franchise for the first time. Reaching out to polling stations for migrants and the poor population was a herculean task.
But to facilitate the migrants and poor people residing in Talwara, Gran Morh and other locations, located in Reasi district on the polling day, the District Election Officer roped in special buses to ferry them to the polling stations.
A fleet of special buses was flagged off from Talwara by Additional Deputy Commissioner Rajinder Singh Tara amidst load slogans of strengthening democracy raised by the migrants.
These migrants moved from interior places after 1998 massacre involving killing of 26 persons of one community followed by a series of killings. Talwara camp has migrants from Arnas, Gulabgarh, Rajouri, Chham sector of Jammu. The polling booths for the 900 migrant families are in Arnas, Prankote, Tulibana Mahore and Chassna and other locations of Gulabgarh and Gool-Arnas assembly constituencies. Eighty-one-year-old Mohd Akram and 79 year old Dev Raj were among the eldest voters who boarded the fleet of buses from Talwara.
District Administration took this unique initiative under SVEEP campaign for electoral inclusion and facilitation. Voter slips were distributed at doorsteps of these migrants in last one week.
A series of meetings were held by the administrative officers in migrant colony to come forward for voting at their respective villages from where they migrated 16 years back.
The district is going to Polls on 17th April 2014 as part of 5-Udhampur parliamentary constituency.
Additional Deputy Commissioner Reasi Rajinder Singh Tara said that for the first time, these migrants are being provided with all possible assistance so that they exercise their franchise on the poll day April17. ARTO Reasi Rajesh Gupta, DIO Parvinder kour, NT Munshi Ram were also present on the occasion.
