Cong prepared to work as NC's B-team, says Mir
Omar to lead the state for one more term

JAMMU, Apr 17: Senior Congress leader and Tourism Minister Ghulam Ahmad Mir on Wednesday jumped on to the bandwagon of another senior Congress leader and Medical Education Minister Taj Mohi-ud-Din, who repeatedly asserted in 2010 and 2011 that Chief Minister Omar Abdullah would complete full term of six years in office and there was no question of any Congress leader replacing the NC working president and Chief Minister Omar Abdullah after he completed three years in office on January 4, 2012. Taj had even claimed that AICC president and UPA chairperson Sonia Gandhi had shared this view with him - a claim that had infuriated many a Congressmen with some of them even demanding stringent action against him saying he was working against the long-term interest of the Congress.
Ghulam Ahmed Mir not only jumped on to the Taj's bandwagon, but he went several steps further to demoralize the already rather demoralized Congress leadership, Congress cadres and supporters. Mir asserted that the NC-Congress coalition will not only form the next Government in the state but Omar Abdullah will be the Chief Minister. "The NC-Congress coalition would form the Government in Jammu and Kashmir for the second time. Omar Sahib will continue to be the Chief Minister for the next six and a half years," he said while addressing an election meeting in Paanzath village of the Devsar Assembly constituency in Kulgam district. He also told Omar Abdullah in front of people to "guarantee that his party (NC) would continue to support the Congress". "There are only two options for Kashmiris Congress or BJP. You have to be either on this side or that. You have to make the choice whether you want to be with secular Congress or communal BJP and its allies Shiv Sena, Akali Dal, Bajrang Dal, VHP and RSS. In the last assembly election, PDP got 3.5 lakh votes, NC 3 lakh and Congress got 2.7 lakh. So, if we jointly take on PDP, we surely can emerge victorious," he also said.
What Mir said would not be taken kindly by many Congress leaders and workers, especially from Jammu province and Ladakh region. The reason is that the people of these two regions do not like the NC. They accuse the NC of perpetrating injustice after injustice on them and pursing a policy that is pro-militant, pro-Pakistan and anti-India. It needs to be noted that majority of the Congress leaders and workers, including Abdul Gani Vakil, a close associate of Ghulam Nabi Azad, had opposed tooth and nail the suggestion that there should be pre-poll alliance between the Congress and the NC and charged the NC leadership with improving its own position at the cost of the Congress. Several senior Congress leaders had even approached the Congress high command to persuade it not to go in for a pre-poll alliance with the NC. They had told the Congress high command that pre-poll alliance with the NC would harm the Congress in the Valley. The fact of the matter is that they tried their level best to defeat the NC's game plan, but failed because the Congress high command rejected all of their suggestions as Congress leaders like Rahul Gandhi had very friendly relations with Omar Abdullah.
Indeed, it is laughable that Mir predicted another victory for the coalition in the coming assembly elections in the state. Who knows what will happen on May 16, when the Election Commission will announce results? The election results will determine the fate of the Congress in Jammu and the NC in Kashmir.
