Kamaal dances to separatists' tunes for electoral gains | NC plays politics over Army's firing range | | Abodh Sharma JAMMU, Apr 17: With electoral battle in Jammu and Kashmir nearing its climax, National Conference has decided to forgo norms of propriety while playing to the galleries for short term political gains. While a senior NC Minister recently announced that the state government was determined not to extend Tosa Maidan lease to Army, a senior party functionary went a step further today when he joined the chorus of separatists and pro Pakistan elements who demand that Army must vacate the land under its 'occupation' in Kashmir. Informed sources disclose that the state government was under obligation to extend lease of Tosa Maidan that hosts Army's Artillery firing range since ages, yet taking cognizance of the popular mood in the valley against the extension, stirred up by the separatist elements. NC additional general secretary Shiekh Mustafa Kamaal said that Kashmir is a 'paradise on earth' and Indian army should not be allowed to use this land for their artillery drills. "It would be injustice towards our 'paradise' if the government provides alternate site to Army for drills" he added. Kamaal went on to join the separatists' chorus when he said, "Mirwaiz is right and I acknowledge his version that only deserts are suited for artillery drills. The job of Army here is to safeguard borders and it is not meant to use the land of Kashmir for their military drills," Kamaal, said. He did not stop here and vindicated pro Pakistan separatist Syed Ali Shah Geelani, who has been demanding withdrawal of Army from Kashmir. "Syed Ali Geelani is not wrong and I agree with him that Army has occupied 4.15 lakhs kanals of land illegally in Kashmir. The job of Army is not to occupy the land in Kashmir illegally but their job is to look after borders," Kamaal said. He said that lakhs of kanals of land in Kashmir are under Army's occupation. "175.64 acres of land is under unauthorized occupation of army at Gulmarg. Government constituted a committee to take back the land from the Army but they are showing reluctance and are adamant to occupy the said land illegally," Kamal said adding that Army in Kashmir is misusing their power and position. The NC additional general secretary said that from the time of Jagmohan as Governor of Jammu and Kashmir till date Army in Kashmir has set up hundreds of permanent camps and stations in all parts of the state. " If National Conference comes into power again, it will ensure that Army vacates from permanent stations and camps and de-occupies the land that is under its illegal control," Kamal said. However, Chief Minister Omar and Union Minister Farooq Abdullah have maintained an interesting silence over the issue. |
