Around 70 % polling recorded, 24% more than previous LS elections
Udhampur-Doda constituency sets new polling record

JAMMU, Apr 17: In replication of the adjoining Jammu-Poonch Lok Sabha segment, the Udhampur-Doda parliamentary constituency, which went to elections today, is also expected to record more than 70 percent polling as the turnout stood at 69.08 percent which is likely to swell further since the final numbers were still awaited till late in the evening.
The heavy voter turnout recorded in Jammu-Poonch Lok Sabha seat meant that it also surpassed the total percentage mark of 2009-parliamentary polls of 45 percent as this time around the segment witnessed a poll percentage of 69 percent, which is 24 percent more than the last election's polling percentage.
With record-breaking voter turnout, all six districts of Udhampur, Doda, Kathua, Kishtwar, Ramban and Reasi which are part of the constituency recorded more than sixty percent polling.
"The last reported figure for Udhampur-Doda Lok Sabha seat is 69.08 percent which is likely to go up as the final details regarding total poll percentage are still awaited," said Chief Electoral Officer (CEO) Umang Narula while addressing media persons here late in the evening.
CEO Narula further said that 67.92% votes were cast in Udhampur district and 70.43% of electorates exercised their franchise in Kathua district while figures of polling in Reasi, Doda, Kishtwar and Ramban stood at 74.84%, 68.41%, 64.46 % and 63.22 % respectively adding that these percentages are tentative as they are based only on last reported figures.
"Figures of exact polling are being received from various other far flung areas of these districts, which would add up to the final poll percentage tally later on," said Narula.
However, the last official figures for Reasi District stood at 82.52% and the percentage of polling in three assembly constituencies of Reasi, Gulabgarh and Gool Arnas falling under this district recorded vote percentage of 81.5, 84 and 81 respectively.
He said the polling was held in a peaceful atmosphere and so far no untoward incident was reported from any part of the constituency and in order to ensure that the polling is done in various inaccessible areas of the hilly districts 45 air sorties were done and 545 poll staff /personnel were airlifted.
"The overall polling in all the six districts went in a peaceful and smooth manner…. It was by and large incident free," said CEO
He further said that 1272 vehicles were also put in use for transportation of polling personnel and material.
The Chief Electoral Officer said that the constituency was spread over large geographical area covering six districts for which as many as 2051 polling station at 1798 locations were set up, which included 198 critical/hypersensitive ones.
In order to improve the voting experience of the voters 53 model polling stations were established with innovative facilities, Narula said and added that web casting was done on 68 polling stations and 337 digital and 132 video cameras were deployed.
Narula said that 269 micro observers were also deployed and 2772 EVMs were used in today's polling.
The CEO said 13 candidates were in the fray for the constituency which comprised 14,68, 886 number of electors including 6,81,206 female and 7,87,680 male voters.
He informed that only six EVMs were replaced owing to some technical snag during the polling in all the districts.
"3 EVMs in Kathua, 1 each in Reasi, Udhampur and Kishtwar had to be replaced after their malfunctioning was reported," said Narula.
Earlier in the day, the voting for the Udhampur-Doda Lok Sabha seat , started at a brisk pace at 7 in the morning across all polling stations with enthusiastic voters lining up to cast their votes in favour of the candidates of their choice who would represent their hopes and aspirations in the 16th Lok Sabha.
All through the day different polling stations witnessed long queues of electorate comprising young, old, males, females who desperately wanted to see their finger imprinted with the 'indelible mark'.
The eagerness of first time voters was quite visible as they flocked the polling stations with extraordinary energy
Sunita, a first time voter in Basohli, hoped that her vote will help provide honour and protection to the women folk in the country in the days to come.
The eagerness of the voters to be a part the biggest jamboree of democracy could be gauged from the fact that polling on a rapid pace was experienced in all the six districts within the first four hours.
As many as 29.87 percent of voters had cast their votes in Udhampur district till 11 am while the figures touched 29.35 percent mark in Kathua district for the same time period.
In Reasi and Doda, the polling reported during the first four hours was 30.12 percent and 22.98 percent while in Kishtwar 27.35 percent of voters and in Ramban 27.68 percent of voters had cast their vote till 11 am.
As the polling progressed, the voting percentage increased further in all the six districts of the constituency.
In Udhampur and Kathua 59.19 percent and 63.71 percent out of the total electorate respectively had cast their votes by 3 pm while in Reasi and Doda, the figures stood at 71 percent and 56.24 percent respectively during the same period. Kishtwar and Ramban reportedly witnessed 58.66 percent and 58.14 percent of voting by then.
At 5 in the evening, the figures touched 67.92 percent in Udhampur, 70.43 percent in Kathua, 74.84 percent in Reasi, 68.41 percent in Doda, 64.46 in Kishtwar and 63.22 in Ramban.
The six district witnessed brisk polling during the second phase of polling in Udhampur-Doda parliamentary segment with all assembly constituencies registering voting percentage almost between 60-70%. And the poll percentage break of some of assembly constituencies is as under:
