Basohli- Mahanpur link on interstate highways' pattern demanded
4/21/2014 11:27:52 PM
Shiv Kumar Padha

Basohli, Apr 21: The 32 km long Basohli Mahanpur link, a life line for the two hilly tehsils of district Kathua , full of blind and sharp curves and prone to accidents is not worth calling a road for human transportation in any progressive society.
The link between Basohli and Mahanpur connects two hilly tehsils Bani and Basohli with the rest of Jammu and Kashmir state and is considered as a life line of these tehsils.
The link was provided as an alternative to the age old Basohli-Lakhanpur road by the Ranjeetsagar Dam authorities after its submergence in the dam water.
The said link, on the one hand is added with 32 kilometers to the previous stretch and on the other it is too curvy and narrow to be considered safe for the journey.
Many times the head on collisions of the vehicles have taken place on the link and also a number of vehicles have skidded off the road and rolled down in the gorges resulting in casualities and serious injuries to the passengers.
The whole link is bouncy as a little distance of 32 kms takes about three hours to cover by the vehicles.
Public of Basohli, Bani and Mahanpur have brought the matter regarding the widening of the link in the notice of the authorities many times but no agency took the cognizance of such complaints and left the passengers commuting on the link, on their fate.
It is learnt that the XEn PWD division Basohli has called the tenders for the widening and the execution of the work is being delayed due to the awaited administrative approval and lifting of the election code of conduct.
Now, when the long awaited bridge over river Ravi is going to be completed by the ending 2014, the whole vehicular traffic to the state from other neighboring states of Punjab, Himachal and Haryana will be routed through this link.
The interstate journey of the passengers from the state via Udhampur and Basohli will be curtailed from 200 to 300 kilometers through the bridge.
It is the need of the hour that the state government in order to make the journey on the link safe and comfortable should at once start widening of the road and develop the link in advance on the pattern of interstate highways in the country.
