Early Times Report
Srinagar, Apr 21: Addressing an election rally along with Congress leaders including Ghulam Nabi Azad and Professor Saifuddin Soz, Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Omar Abdullah said he would take a ticket to Muzaffarabad, but not stop criticizing and opposing the BJP Prime Ministerial candidate Narendra Modi.
Addressing an election rally in central Beerwah Tehsil of Budgam district, Omar Abdullah said Giriraj Singh of the BJP has said those who oppose Modi should go to Pakistan, Omar Abdullah said, "I don't have to take a ticket to Pakistan from any other place. I will take a ticket to Muzaffarabad from here and leave rather than stop criticism of Narendra Modi and his policies."
It is strange that the entire political discourse of the country including that in the State has finally come to revolve around just one person, Narendra Modi.
It seems Modi has been haunting his political adversaries like nobody else has ever done in the past. Never before in the election to the Lok Sabha has one single person hogged all the limelight. Be it political rallies, party meetings, television debates etc there all are focussed on Narendra Modi.
It has become second nature for his opponents to begin and end their speeches with his name. And, this is the single most important achievement of a person who till the other day had been just a "Chai Wala" for the kings and monarchs of Indian political establishment. Just in very distant past was Rahul Gandhi asked a question about Modi and he simply brushed it aside with ridicule. Nobody among the Mughals of the country's political set-up ever believed that an ordinary Indian would one day stand up and prove to be their biggest challenge. Whatever the result of the Lok Sabha elections and whatever the verdict of the people when they choose their next Prime Minister, the fact remains that Narendra Modi has become central to country's political discourse for many years to come.
It is not important whether he becomes the Prime Minister of the country on his own strength with the BJP getting a simple majority in the 16th Lok Sabha or does so with the support of the NDA allies. The fact today is that nobody who is anybody is talking of anybody other than Modi as the next Prime Minister of the country.
This used to happen in the past only when political giants like Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru was around. Even during the times of Nehru's daughter, Indira Priyadarshani Gandhi, nobody could say with absolute certainty that there was no challenge to her stature. In fact, Indira's political career had started with the opposition of the syndicate during her formative years as the Prime Minister of India.
That an ordinary Indian like Narendra Modi is spoken of as the most probable next Prime Minister of India is not only the success of our democratic system, but also an affirmation by the people of this country that nobody holds a proprietary claim on the top job.
