Insulting people of Jammu, Ladakh

JAMMU, Apr 21: Election campaign in Kashmir is in full swing. The NC, PDP, the BJP and the AAP - apart from the presence of a few other candidates in the electoral arena - have fielded their candidates for all the three Lok Sabha seats. The NC and the PDP are the major players and the BJP is trying its level best to increase its support-base in the Valley. The AAP has claimed that it is also a serious contender. It appears to be a tall claim. Of course, it would get a few votes at the cost of the NC. Interestingly, the BJP candidates, all Muslims, have been taking on the NC and the PDP candidates, tearing into the NC-Congress coalition government and accusing it of failing the people of the state and raking up Article 370. Bringing in Article 370 in the election campaign by the BJP candidates in Kashmir is a major development. They are not directly demanding its repeal; they are echoing the views of BJP's PM candidate Narendra Modi and demanding debate on it so that the issue is clinched for all the times to come.
As for the NC and the PDP, they are using very strong words against each other. While the NC is consistently accusing the PDP of working with the BJP behind the curtain to weaken the ruling coalition, the PDP is denouncing the NC as a party that has ditched the people of the state. The PDP is seeking the people's mandate assuring them that it would stem the rot if it is voted to power and the NC is seeking people's mandate on an agenda which is essentially anti-Narendra Modi and anti-Muftis. Omar Abdullah has been dubbing Mufti Mohammad Sayeed as Amit Shah of Narendra Modi in Kashmir.
The NC has also been going to the extent of insulting and ridiculing the people of Jammu province and Ladakh region and openly saying that the NC and the Congress combine will fight together for Kashmiris and their aspirations. Who made this outrageous and rabidly anti-Jammu and anti-Ladakh statement and when and where? It was none other than NC candidate for the Baramulla-Kupwara Lok Sabha seat Sharif-ud-Din Shariq who made this statement. He made the statement on April 16 while addressing an election rally at Dak Bungalow, Baramulla, after filing nomination papers with Returning Officer for Baramulla parliamentary seat.
What exactly did he say? He said: "The NC- Congress alliance was forged because of weaknesses of the two parties. May be it (alliance) is because of our own weaknesses. The NC and the Congress are equally dependent and bound to have alliance with each other…Coalition partners have joined hands to defeat the people, who propagate communal division. We (NC- Congress) will fight together for Kashmiris and their aspirations…People have to stand together to defeat people, who want to hurt dignity of Kashmiris". It was a highly condemnable statement that he made. There was no reference whatever to Jammu and Ladakh and the aspirations of the people these two regions house. He was highly, highly specific and unambiguous when he talked of Kashmiris and their aspirations.
What Shariq said could not be construed as his personal view. Indeed, it was the party view. The people of Jammu and Ladakh need to take a serious cognizance of his statement and adopt a proper attitude towards the NC, which has been crossing the line for many years now.
The people of Jammu and Ladakh have not only to give an appropriate response to the out-and-out Kashmir-centric and sectarian NC, but also to the Congress, which has become B-team of the NC for all practical purposes. That the Congress has become B-team of the NC could be seen from the statement of senior Congress leader and Tourism Minister that Omar Abdullah would be the Chief Minister for the next six years and a half.
