Militants carry out twin attacks in Tral, kill 3 persons | Sarpanch, numberdar among deceased | | Jehangir Rashid SRINAGAR, Apr 21: In a late night development militants carried out two separate attacks in the Tral area of South Kashmir's Pulwama district leading to death of three persons including a Sarpanch. Searches are going on in the area to nab the militants. Reports reaching here said that unidentified gunmen appeared twice in the Tral area and shot dead the three persons within a short span of time. The killings sent shock waves among the people. Tonight's killings come few days after the recent killing of a Sarpanch in the Gulzarpora village of Awantipora area in the Pulwama district as well. Reports said that militants fired upon Mohammad Anwar Khanday son of Sadiq Khanday resident of Amlar village of Tral at around 9:10 pm. Khanday was shot at from point blank range just outside his residence and was seen in a pool of blood. Anwar, numberdar of Amlar village, was shifted to nearby hospital where doctors declared him brought dead. Hardly few minutes later 15 minutes to be precise militants appeared in another locality. In a similar incident militants barged inside the house of Ghulam Nabi Mir at Batgund-Tral in the same district. The militants opened fire on Ghulam Nabi and his son Firdous Ahmad. Ghulam Nabi, a Sarpanch, affiliated with Congress and his son Firdous Ahmad Mir sustained grievous injuries in the incident and shifted to a local hospital. Both Ghulam Nabi and Firdous Ahmad succumbed to their injuries at the hospital. The killings that took place within a span of 15 minutes sent shock waves among the people. A pall of gloom has descended on both the Amlar and Batagund villages and villagers are quite worried over the killing of a Sarpanch, his son and a numberdar. Senior police and security forces officials have rushed to the spot to take stock of the situation. Importantly militants managed to flee from both the localities after carrying out the attacks. A manhunt has been launched to nab the militants who carried out the two attacks. Special Operations Group (SOG) of Jammu & Kashmir Police, Army and Central Reserve Police Force personnel have cordoned off both the areas and launched the hunt to nab the militants responsible for the killings. Hardly few days back militants had killed a Sarpanch owing allegiance to Peoples' Democratic Party in the Gulzarpora village of Awantipora area in Pulwama district. Following this incident seven Panchayat members had tendered their resignation in this district and pressure was mounting on others to do the same. Militants have been carrying out attacks on Sarpanchs and Panchs across the length and breadth of the Kashmir valley with some Sarpanches and Panches getting killed as well. These people have time and again maintained that they have nothing to do with politics and have been elected by people to solve their day to day problems. Militant organizations have been asking the Sarpanchs and Panchs to quit from their posts or be ready for the dangerous consequences.
