The local populace in basholi and its adjoining areas witnessing the ongoing construction work is feeling happy and contented about their dream to come to true after a long time. Having no bounds to his joys, Sanjay Sharma a resident of Basohli, said, "India's fourth cable stayed bridge' started in the border state Kathua of Jammu and Kashmir, after its competition will enhance connectivity of the landlocked region and be of strategic importance to armed forces. He said, "Ravi Bridge inaugurated by UPA Chairperson Sonia Gandhi on May 23, 2011 has a unique feature of being a bridge measuring 592-Meter long across river Ravi will further connect Himachal Pradesh and Punjab with Jammu and Kashmir at Basohli."This Bridge is also seen as of highest significance to armed forces, as it will greatly help in cutting their reaction time. Jammu and Kashmir is a sensitive state bordering Pakistan and China, he added.Another local resident Ramesh Padha said, "The Basohli Bridge will be fourth of its kind in India and first in North India as the three cable bridges across the India are Hooghly Bridge at Kolkata, Naini Bridge in Allahabad and Rajiv Gandhi Sea Link in Mumbai". Highlighting the importance of the bridge as an important milestone in better road connectivity, he said that the bridge would give uplift to the socio economic development of people living in three states along the banks of River Ravi. "The bridge also known as Basohli Bridge is seen as a benefit to people in these areas as there is no direct route from Basohli to Pathankot. Once the Ravi Bridge is constructed and operational, the distance between Riyalta and Lakhanpur will be reduced to 46 kms from present 72 kms", he added. He also hoped that it would also prove a boon to boost to the socio-economic development of the area, by way of an increase in tourism and commercial activities with reduction of distances to other important tourist places like Dalhousie, Chamba, etc. Pertinently the tower height of 88 Meter above deck level will have two lanes with the width of 13.93 Meters and 1.5 Meter footpaths on either side. The bridge will have its decking and span regions supported by cables. The estimated cost of the bridge is Rupees 145 Crores and government has fixed September 2014 as the deadline for construction of this bridge. Local businessperson Kant Kumar said the bridge will act as an alternate route and will open up to cut-off areas of Kathua, Doda and Kishtwar districts. "There are some distinguished features of this region, first it is exceedingly beautiful with virgin valleys, streams and lakes, and secondly there is huge potential of mining like limestone and gypsum," said Ravinder Singh another local from Basholi. "A number of development activities will receive a fillip once the bridge is commissioned", he with sheer sense of optimism said, at the same time with quite appreciative for the sincere efforts of Border Road Organization (BRO) , added it seems sooner the people would see a new era. |
