Once a strong NC bastion, Srinagar may spring surprises in Assembly elections | | | Jehangir Rashid SRINAGAR, June 17: The upcoming Assembly elections may spring a surprise or two in the summer capital of the state since the opposition People’s Democratic Party (PDP) has got a great chance to grab at least three to four seats in the Srinagar district. The Srinagar district which sends eight legislators to the state Assembly has always been considered to be a strong bastion of National Conference. However, of late the situation has changed with PDP making inroads across the district. Given the anti-incumbency factor it is quite possible that PDP may win some of the seats from the Srinagar district. PDP has got great chances to score over its opponents in Assembly segments like Batamaloo, Hazratbal, Eidgah, Sonwar and Zadibal. The people of these constituencies are dissatisfied with the performance of the sitting legislators and want a change in the guard. The Government has failed them and they want to teach a lesson to the people at helm. It was due to this strong anti-incumbency wave that National Conference President, Dr. Farooq Abdullah lost the elections for the Srinagar-Budgam Lok Sabha seat against PDP's Tariq Hameed Karra. The NC leaders are yet to come out of this shock and one cannot rule out further shocks during the Assembly elections. "National Conference has always been saying that Srinagar is their identity. On ground the party legislators have done very little to substantiate their claims. The people of summer capital have been forced to pay for the sins which they never committed. It is high time to go for a change so that nobody takes city residents for a ride," said Mohammad Sarwar, a resident of Sonwar. The sitting legislators representing Batamaloo, Hazratbal, Eidgah, Sonwar and Zadibal have failed miserably. Legislators Irfan Ahmad Shah, Dr. Sheikh Mustafa Kamaal, Mubarak Gul, Mohammad Yaseen Shah and Peer Afaq Ahmad representing these constituencies have failed in providing relief to the common masses. "Srinagar city is considered to be the heart of Kashmir valley but the ground situation suggests totally opposite. There is no development and it would be better to say that there is under development in the Srinagar city. The legislators have failed to solve the basic problems of the people and not to talk of the compound problems being faced by people," said Imran Ahmad, a resident of Lal Bazar. People in general are quite disturbed with the fact that there is severe shortage of drinking water in the city. They opine that the legislators have done little to solve this all important problem. Over the past few days residents of various localities have been carrying protests against the state Government while alleging apathy. "The legislators are meant to solve the basic problems of the people but unfortunately the city legislators have failed to do so. These people seldom visit their constituencies to get a feel of the miseries of the common masses. Shortage of drinking water, bad roads and power breakdown are some of the glaring problems being faced by the people. There is no solution to these problems with people being forced to feel the heat," said Abdul Razak, a resident of Hazratbal. |
