Cop killed, Inspector injured in Sopore clashes | | | Syed Tahir Bukhari
BARAMULLA, July 26: A policeman was killed and four others including an Inspector of Special Operation Group sustained injuries after militants opened heavy fire upon them in North Kashmir's volatile town of Sopore, during the intervening night of July 25-26. According to official sources, the incident took place at around 2:30 am (during intervening night of July 25-26) when the Special Operation Group (SOG) of police while chasing a group of alleged stone pelters at Chota Bazar(fish Market) near Jamia Masjid were fired upon. In the meantime, the militants opened indiscriminate fire upon the SOG team resulting in the on spot death of a policeman Mohammad Sayed of Milyal in Kupwara and injuring four others, official sources said. The four others injured have been identified as Inspector Diraj Singh, Head Constable Yusuful Umar, Constable Anaytullah and Constable Imtiyaz. All the injured have been hospitalized they said. Sources said that during nocturnal clashes two protesters Mudasir Yaseen and Muzaffar Ahmad sustained injuries after forces used tear smoke shells to disperse the group of protesting youth in the town. They said that the group of protesters also torched several municipality dustbins, besides they attacked several CRPF bunkers and police station with stones. Soon after the incident army, police and CRPF cordoned off the whole area and launched massive searches to nab the attackers. Unfortunately the attack occurred during the holiest Muslim night of 'Shabir-e-Qadr' when devotees across the world spend the night in prayer and penance. According to Police official in this incident Mohammad Syed Khan gave supreme sacrifice and that too in the month of Ramdan(Fasting).The deceased policeman is survived by five daughters and a pregnant wife and aged parents. Meanwhile a police spokesperson in a statement said that, "in the midnight miscreant's pelted stones on police, CRPF bunkers at SBI and main Chowk Sopore. "While the stone pelters were being tackled near Chota Bazar Sopore, terrorists among the stone pelters hurled a grenade and fired indiscriminately on a police party resulting in on spot death of Constable Mohammad Syed Khan and injuries to 04 police personnel". All the injured police personnel were shifted to SDH Sopore and B B Cant Hospital Srinagar, where their condition is reported to be stable, He said. However a top police official told Early Times that Sopore Police, Special Operation Group (SOG) and Army launched a joint search operation in fish market area of Sopore town in North Kashmir's Baramulla district during early morning of Saturday to nab the attackers. |
