Jammu, Aug 21 : 305th Vanmahotsava Tree Talk the popular eco awareness programme was hosted in collaboration with NSS unit of Govt College for Women (GCW) Gandhi Nagar Jammu where National Translation Mission workshop participants and NSS volunteers participated enthusiastically Principal college Dr Kiran Bakshi , CCF Ecotourism O P Sharma and NSS Incharge Dr Ashaq Malik planted saplings of Sita Ashok Saraca asoca and Golden Rain Tree Koelreuteria paniculata in the herbal park to mark Harmony week commenced from today.While highlighting significance of Vanmahotsava, O P Sharma Vidyarthi shared that then Union Agriculture and Food Minister Dr Kanahiya Lal Munshi floated the idea of Festival of Trees popularly called Vanmahotsava in 1950 while advocating mass planting in all available spaces. "Tree planting earlier given a fillip under Social Forestry Programme has got recently a renewed focus under 2014 Agroforestry Policy of India to enhance availability of fuel ,fruit ,fodder ,fiber ,increase productivity of agricultural soils conserve moisture to ameliorate climate extremes, he said. Vidyarthi emphasized the need to cultivate the local plant species and to revive the plant based local knowledge of treating various ailments. Prof Kiran Bakshi and Dr Ashaq Malik incharge NSS programme also talked about and the local uses and discussed medicinal values of the plants. Prof Sangeeta Nagari ,Prof Veena Sumbariya ,Prof Satinder Kaur ,Prof Suman Sharma also planted saplings on the occasion
