| Government looks other way as city roads develop pot-holes | | | SRINAGAR, Aug 24: Mocking at the shoddy approach of the government to patch up dilapidated roads of summer capital, people in most areas of city complained of water logging which according to them has become a cause of huge inconvenience to the general public. Notwithstanding tall claims of the government to provide better roads to Srinagar residents most of the city roads which includes city's commercial nerve centre Lal Chowk, Magarmal Bagh, Exhibition Crossing, Batamaloo, Hari Singh High Street, Munawarabad, Rambagh, Nowpora, Khayam and Mehjoor Nagar are depicting a sorry tale of the government.
These roads had developed deep ruts and authorities seem to be least bothered to give them a new shape.
Mohammad Shaban Bhat a street vendor at Lal Chowk said "the bad condition of road in the city-centre signifies the lackadaisical attitude of the government towards the development of the Valley.""Roads and footpaths in Lal Chowk have developed potholes and no one knows when an untoward incident takes place. The problem is compounded during rains as the roads get completely inundated in water which causes inconvenience to the people and hours long traffic jam on busy road," said Bhat.
Roads in commercial hub Lal Chowk and old city remains water logged for days altogether during rains which severely hampers pedestrian and vehicular movement.
Most of the roads and footpaths owing to the casual approach of the authorities in giving them a new look had now developed deep pot holes while as the government despite spending huge amount on the development of city roads every year has miserably failed to provide better roads to the people.
"The condition of roads at trendy Residency Road had turned from bad to worse. Not a single road from Dalgate to Batamaloo seems fit for vehicular movement. Every vital road junction be it Maulana Azad Road or Lal Chowk is dotted with potholes with a minor rainfall inundating them for days together," Riyaz Ahmad a government official said.
A minor rainfall results in water logging in Lal Chowk while as the government does not even bother to install dewatering pumps not to talk about their renovation.
People from Bemina, HMT and its surrounding areas alleged that government turns a blind eye towards their day to day issues. They said despite repeated pleas the government has miserably failed to dewater their swamped area which has caused huge inconvenience to the residents specially children and elderly persons. "It is an irony that the administration despite repeated appeals turned a blind eye towards our issues with regards to water logging in our area. We describe in words that what sort of complexity we are facing as a minor rainfall is enough to inundated our entire locality," Mohammad Ashraf Shah a resident of HMT told Early Times. |
