4 militants, 2 troopers killed in Kupwara encounter
Officer among three army men injured

KUPWARA, Aug 24: Four ultras and two troopers were killed and three army men including an officer sustained injuries in two separate encounters at Keran sector and Kalaroosa area of Kupwara district in north Kashmir on Sunday. According to official sources a group of 7-8 militants who had sneaked into this side of line of control (LOC) near Z-Gali in Machil sector on the intervening night of August 21 and 22, after reaching Dhok Behak area of Nunwani in Kalarosa was intercepted by the army's 41 and 45 Rashtriya Rifles (RR).
"The militants after being challenged opened fire upon the forces which was retaliated ensuing a fierce gun-battle, whereas the helicopters were also pressed into service, during the gunfight four ultras have been gunned down and two troopers of 45 RR got injured, official said. Among the three injured, two soldiers have been identified as Naik Vinod Kumar of 45 RR and Naik Niraj Kumar of 57 RR were immediately airlifted to Army's 92 base hospital in Badambagh Srinagar where Niraj Kumar died due to injuries, He maintained. "A reinforcement of army's 18 RR and 28 RR also cordoned off all the forest routes connecting to Nunwani Kalaroos", they said. An Army soldier was killed after a group of militants attacked army's patrolling party along Line of Control (LoC) in Keran sector of north Kashmir's Kupwara district last night.
Official sources said that a group of militants opened fire upon army's patrolling party of 23 Grenadier (under 268 Infantry Division) at Mundian forest in Keran sector late last night."In the attack an army soldier Sepoy Rahul Kumar, 22, (Belt no. 270831 P) sustained critical bullet injuries", sources said, adding that the injured soldier was immediately shifted to army hospital in Drugmulla area of Kupwara district.
However, today morning the injured soldier succumbed to injuries, Kumar, a resident of Bulandsahar in Utter Pradesh and his body is being sent to his native village, He said. He said that the militant group believed to be 4-5 in number and who managed to escape after carrying out the attack. However, an extra contingent of forces rushed to the area to combat the militants hiding in the area, he said and added that the bodies of ultras were not identified yet.
A top official confirmed the death of a soldier in the operation, and operation in the area was called off and search operation is still in progress to trace down the hiding militants.
