NC-Cong not in race, it’s PDP versus BJP | Disconcert Omar says, won't allow BJP to enter Kashmir | | Fazal Khan
Srinagar, Aug 24: The surge of Bharatiya Janata Party at the national level and in Jammu region, and resurgence of Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Kashmir has changed the political scenario in JK ahead of the Assembly polls, slated to be held later this year. The main opposition party in JK, PDP today claimed that National Conference and Congress are nowhere in the race as people are fed up of their six years of "misrule." Talking to Early Times the PDP spokesman Naeem Akhtar said, "Situation has changed. NC and Congress will face a rout in the Assembly elections like they faced in the Parliamentary polls. It is going to be a direct contest between the PDP and BJP. NC and Congress don't figure anywhere." Many political observers seconded Akther's view saying, "In Kashmir winds are blowing in favour of PDP, while in Jammu and Ladakh regions BJP is on a strong wicket. If one just studies the results of the past Parliamentary elections, PDP had won 41 Assembly segments out of 87 in JK and fell just short of three seats from attaining simple majority." Similarly, they said, in Jammu region BJP won both the Parliamentary seats and its candidates led in most Assembly segments. "Trends and surveys indicate that both NC and Congress will face a humiliating defeat in the coming assembly elections," observers added. Shaken by the emergence of the BJP in Jammu and Kashmir, Chief Minister Omar Abdullah while speaking on the sidelines of a function at Chanapora here said, "Only National Conference has the ability to defeat the BJP's new slogan Delhi huwi hamari, ab Kashmir ki baari. We will not allow BJP to sneak into Kashmir." BJP's existence in Kashmir since 1947 has been negligible and many people believe that BJP won't be able to make inroads in the Valley but as far as Jammu is concerned party has already turned the tables on Congress in many areas and NC has no existence in Jammu region. "Chief Minister Omar Abdullah is day dreaming and is raising hollow slogans to attract the attention of the people. He also knows it very well that NC-Congress rule in JK has come to an end and his party's defeat is inevitable," said a senior BJP leader. On being told that BJP has no base in Kashmir, he said, "We have to make a beginning and we are on the job. Maybe we are not that strong in Kashmir but we are sure of our victory in Jammu region. BJP will definitely have a role in the formation of new government in JK after the assembly elections end." A senior Congress leader said that political pandits are underestimating the potential of the party. "We know at present that time is not favoring us that doesn't mean that we have lost the battle," he said. |
