Omar to contest from Sonawar
But who cares for Farooq Abdullah

JAMMU, Aug 24: It's not that NC in which Farooq Abdullah's writ used to run. He has virtually lost his control over the party. It is an altogether different NC. It is NC in which Farooq Abdullah can only propose. It is for working president of the NC and J&K CM Omar Abdullah and members of his coterie who take the final decision. They are the chief determinants. Farooq Abdullah's brother and sitting MLA from Hazratbal, Mustafa Kamaal, also has little or no say in the party. His position is very weak in the party. It is Tanir Sadiq, Junaid Azim Mattu and Nasir Aslam Wani who really matter in the NC of Omar Abdullah. The likes of Ali Mohammad Sagar appear to be compulsions. That was the reason the elevation of Sagar to the post of general secretary had surprised many in the media. Two developments within the NC cannot be overlooked. One, credible sources in the NC reveal that Farooq Abdullah was not in favour of his son Omar Abdullah's decision to change his constituency from Ganderbal to Sonawar or Hazratbal, which, according to the Omar Abdullah's poll managers, "are safe" constituencies for the NC working president. His view was that "Ganderbal had stood solidly behind the Abdullah family for years and in case Omar Abdullah decided to contest the upcoming assembly election from some other constituency, it would send a wrong signal". There is logic in it. It was a sane counsel.
Two, the party politics within the NC has created an awkward situation for Mustafa Kamaal. It is not a secret that Kamaal had publicly opposed the idea of Omar Abdullah seeking election from two constituencies of Sonawar and Hazratbal. In other words, he had declared that he would not vacate the seat for his nephew. If reports emanating from the party headquarters in Srinagar are any indication, then it can be said that Mustsfa Kamaal would not be given the mandate to seek re-election from Hazratbal constituency. He could be pitted against Agriculture Minister Ghulam Hassan Mir, who enjoys the full backing of the Congress. Mir represents Tangmarg assembly constituency and he is very popular there. He had also defeated Mustafa Kamaal oncein the same constituency. There were also reports that Kamaal might not even contest the assembly election. He was so upset with those have established their full control over the party. These two developments involving Farooq Abdullah and Mustafa Kamaal do not augur well for the future of the NC. These would surely have a negative impact on the poll prospects of the NC, which is already passing through a very critical phase.
