`Secular' Omar urges PDP to swear by Quran for facilitating BJP's Mission 44+ | | | Early Times Report
Srinagar, Aug 24: A `secular' Omar Abdullah today urged PDP to swear by holy Quran to clear that it had no role to play in BJP's mission 44+. Omar said BJP was eying a few seats in Kashmir by relying on poll boycott and tacit support of the PDP. Omar also made clear that NC would never join hands with BJP in future come what may. He was addressing an election rally at Chanpora in Amira Kadal constituency. The people of Kashmir have every reason not to believe Omar Abdullah. History is witness to the fact that the NC has never honoured its promises. In early 70s Sheikh Muhammad Abdullah called for social boycott of Congress men. The boycott almost isolated them. But a few years later, he became CM with Congress support. Similarly his father, Dr Farooq Abdullah flirted with the opposition in 1983. His workers pulled down their pants to greet former Prime Minister, Indira Gandhi in the erstwhile Hazuri Bagh, now Iqbal Park. He paid the price and in 1986 forged an alliance with Rajiv Gandhi. He joined BJP and then Congress to stay in power. During the Legislative Council elections seven BJP MLAs voted for NC, why? Some nice people have said, `politics makes strange bed fellows' and the NC has proved it. The NC has to do a lot of explaining. While seeking votes for Nasir Aslam Wani, Omar talked about ten community centres and the under construction fly-over from Rambagh to Jehangir Chowk. He also talked about extension of Lal Ded hospital. "Amira Kadal constituency is a prime example of our work over the last five and a half years and how we believe in hard-work and honesty", he said. However, the only development that is visible in Amira Kadal constituency is a watch installed in the not-so-historic Clock tower in Lal Chowk. The tower was without a watch for quite some time and when it had one, it showed wrong time. This is the most significant `development' that has taken place in Amira Kadal constituency during the past six years. Omar Abdullah said that National Conference was the only party that had spoken about the political aspirations of the people of J&K while in power and that the party would continue to advocate a political resolution in line with the rights, views and aspirations of the people of Jammu and Kashmir. "PDP has shelved its 'Self-Rule' agenda and has disbanded its 'Healing Touch' slogan overnight with remarkable alacrity. Yes, Omar talked about accession in Legislative Assembly but the NC is responsible for the mess he state finds itself in today. Because of NC, the people were never accepted in India or Pakistan. |
