Embarrassment for coalition as NC legislator reaches well of House, registers protest | Marshaled out on direction of Speaker | | Jehangir Rashid SRINAGAR, Aug 30: In a major embarrassment for the ruling coalition a legislator of National Conference trooped into the well of the Assembly, raised slogans and carried out a sit-in in support of his demand. The legislator was later marshaled out of the house. Feeling dissatisfied with the answer of Minister for Agriculture, Ghulam Hassan Mir, MLA Sopore, Mohammad Ashraf Ganie registered his protest by reaching the well of the House. The MLA accused the Minister of misleading the House by providing wrong information. He got support from some of the legislators belonging to North Kashmir. The MLA Sopore had moved a calling attention notice in which he raised concern over the shifting of faculty of Horticulture/Forestry from Agriculture College, Wadura in Sopore to Sher-I-Kashmir University of Agricultural Sciences and Technology-Kashmir (SKUAST-K) Shalimar. In his reply the agriculture minister said that B Sc (Horticulture) degree programme is running at Wadura without change. Mir said that because of increased number of admission during current academic session additional sections have been arranged at SKUAST-K, Shalimar. He said the post graduate studies which were run at SKUAST-Shalimar from inception continue there as such. Regarding the faculty of forestry the agriculture minister said that the faculty was temporarily shifted from SKUAST-Shalimar to Wadura. He said the land for establishment of the faculty has been allotted by the government at Benihama-Ganderbal and infrastructure is being created there. Mir said the faculty will continue to function at Wadura till the infrastructure and other required facilities get in place at Benihama. As soon as the agriculture minister finished his answer, MLA Sopore stood up and accused the minister of spreading lies on the floor of the house. He turned vociferous in his demand and said that the entire Horticulture faculty has been shifted from Wadura-Sopore. The legislator referred to this as an injustice with the students who have got admission at Agriculture College, Wadura. There was a war of words between the legislator and the minister with both exchanging heated arguments. Legislators Basharat Bukhari, Engineer Abdul Rashid and Abdul Haq Khan also joined the chorus. These legislators also reached the well of house and wanted the speaker to issue directions to the minister since he according to them has provided wrong information. MLA Rafiabad, Javed Ahmad Dar also joined the debate and raised the concern over the shifting of Faculty of Horticulture from Wadura to SKUAST-K, Shalimar. He was asked by Bukhari, Rashid and Haq to join them in the well of the house but the suggestion was turned down by the legislator from Rafiabad. The protesting legislators were pacified and they returned to their chairs. However, after some time the MLA Sopore, returned to the well of the house and resumed his protest. He sat in the well and started shouting towards the speaker. After some time he once again approached the speaker and this time he sat on the chair of secretary legislative assembly. As the proceedings of the house were getting disrupted the speaker ordered the marshals to take the legislator out of the house. The legislator argued with one of the marshals and asked the marshal not to touch him. |
