Politicians offer jobs for votes to youth

Srinagar, Aug 30: Ahead of the Assembly elections workers of various political parties in Kashmir are meeting youth and their families "secretly" and are promising them government jobs in lieu of their votes. According to reports pouring in from various districts these workers go house to house promise jobs to youth and their families in lieu of their votes.
However youth of the Valley while terming these promises as false claims said these workers only play with their emotions and these jobs are never provided after elections are over. According to experts politicians here know that in the presence of six lakh unemployed youth promise of Government job would sell like a hot cake. "These promises are forgotten by politicians soon after the elections and the youth are left high and dry," they said. Imtiyaz Ahmad Bhat of Pulwama area of south Kashmir shares his inputs with Early Times and he remembers how in the last assembly elections he was approached by the workers of a political party and had sought votes in lieu of providing a government job to him. Imtiyaz said that he has lived all his life in abject poverty and the promise of workers had evoked hope in the heart of his parents and they began to count the days left for his job.
"After elections were over I filled several forms I was disappointed as that was the only exercise which I did after the elections ended. Till date I am waiting for the job," he said. Similar promises were made with some other youth of the area.
Firdous Ahmad Bhat is one such youth. Bhat said: "After elections if you tell them I voted for your party, they reply that you are not the only one who voted for us. Thousands of people vote for them and they cannot provide job to everyone," he said. Unemployment in the valley is currently a hot issue. According to latest figures there are six lakh unemployed youth in the state. In the absence of private sector most youth are sitting idle at homes.
