What has Omar Govt achieved by the way? | | | Early Times Report
Jammu, Sept 5: A Chief Minister, Omar Abdullah's six-year rule will end in the coming days. A critical analysis of the years bygone reflect Omar's failure on almost all the fronts. Omar had strained relations with the fourth estate from the very beginning. Apart from forty attacks on the media persons since 2010, the state legislature issued three breach of privilege notices against three noted journalists in a single session in 2010. The persecution of media during Omar's rule, however did not go un-noticed. It evoked a response from the Chairman Press Council of India. Omar was told to refrain from using force against scribes. In his letter, the chairman of the council expressed dismay over what he called use of force against journalists while performing professional duties. This should not be treated as an ordinary letter. It reflects government's failure to allow fourth estate to flourish. In the coming days , Omar led government may highlight the achievements through paid advertisements. The advertisements will talk about issue of ration cards and connected issues like transfer from one ration depot to other and inclusion of a new born. Well these are mundane issues and every government is under an obligation to perform this duty without delay. It cannot be projected as an achievement. The government may also boast of Panchayat elections and empowerment of the Panchayats. However, the mass resignation of panchs and sarpanchs reflects the failure of the government to empower them. Omar gave up his demand of restoration of autonomy and revocation of armed Forces Special Powers Act (AFSA) one after the other. He diluted the RTI, rendered the State Human Rights Commission (SHRC) defunct by deliberately delaying appointment of its chairpersons and members, could not form the truth and reconciliation commission (TRC) as promised. The list of failures is too long to be reproduced here. Today Omar is accused of denting the credibility of the Sheikh Family and the National Conference. Omar declared himself as the Chief Ministerial candidate of NC. This announcement has not gone down well in the NC and even in the Sheikh Family. Omar desperately needs a saviour. Will his friend play the Rana Partap for him? |
