JAMMU, Sept 5: With 41 more civilians losing their life in the rain catastrophe that has hit the state, the number of dead on the fourth consecutive day of rain and flood fury has reached 105 across Jammu region.
More than 700 houses have been fully damaged while around 800 houses have suffered partial damage due to flash floods in 12 districts of Jammu region. Livestock too has suffered extensive damage with around 355 killed and more than 100 odd missing. 13 government buildings including a government school alongwith several bridges have collapsed, resulting in several villages getting completely disconnected from rest of the world.
Around 6000 people were evacuated to safety from flood-hit villages around river Tawi and Chenab by teams of Army, Police, Civil Defence, NDRF and SDRF. High alert has been sounded by Divisional Administration as the river Chenab, Tawi, Ujh, Suran and Poonch river were flowing above danger mark. Water level in river Chenab near Akhnoor was 12 feet above danger mark while river Tawi too crossed the danger mark with administration advising people not to stand for long on the seven bridges over river Tawi.
Army has been kept on stand-by. 300-km-long Jammu-Srinagar National Highway remained closed for vehicular traffic for third consecutive day today due to landslides at various places in Jammu region of the state. Due to closure of the road, 1200 vehicles, including passenger vehicles, were stranded on the highway. Men and machines of Border Roads Organisation (BRO) were working to clear the highway but while till the filing of this report, all highways were closed.
There are also over a dozen inter-district roads closed due to landslides, washing of roads, breaches and sinking of roads and flooding in Doda, Kishtwar, Ramban, Samba, Jammu, Udhampur, Reasi, Rajouri, Poonch, and Kathua districts of Jammu region. Police has also asked the people to avoid travelling for the next couple of days on roads in various flood-hit areas.
In the incident involving drowning of a bus carrying Baratis in Rajouri, 13 more dead bodies were recovered taking the toll in district Rajouri to 66 including 17 fresh casualties. According to DIG Rajouri-Poonch A.K.Atri, 25 bodies were recovered from the site of bus accident while 17 other people including 4 members of a family were killed in Thanamandi town after their house collapsed due to land slide.
He added that three persons of a family died when their Dhok at Baglihar in Peer Panjal mountain range collapsed and two persons were also killed in Darhal and Sunderbani Tehsils today due to landslides. One of them has been identified as Rakia Begum wife of Mohammed Shabir. He further said that house of Nazarat Hussain son of Mohammed Sadiq situated in ward No 13 of Thanamandi Tehsil was completely damaged due to land slide at about 12.30 pm today and in the mishap, 13 persons were killed including Nazarat alongwith and 3 members of his family and 9 others.
The deceased have been identified as Gulzar Akhter, Zaffar Ahmed, Intkhaz, wife and two sons of Mohammed Nazarat. Nadela Kouser and his three daughters namely Firdose, Mehroom Akhter, Mafia Akhter and his son Aamir Mohammed, Hamida Begum, Mohammed Riyaz and his daughter Sanam Mehroom and a local identified as Fazal Hussain was also killed in the mishap.
After strenuous efforts Police teams have been able to reach out the worst affected areas of district Rajouri and able to save hundreds of people including children who were evacuated to safe places. Manpower of District Police in association with Army evacuated 62 persons from Khandli Nallah to safer places. 550 persons including women and children were also evacuated from Bela Colony to safer places.
Moreover, 15 persons including women have been also rescued from Dhanigri near District Jail. 13 casualties have been reported from Poonch district alongwith severe damage to the several hundred houses in Poonch district. Apart from deaths, Rajouri has been worst hit with around 70 houses fully damaged and 136 partially. Of the 13 killed in Poonch; 11 are civilian, I BSF personnel and 1 from the army. 3 others are missing and administration suspects that they are dead.
In Rajouri District, flash floods have resulted in extensive damage to around 318 roads including 108 under PMGSY, 158 flood control schemes, 6 school Buildings alongwith washing away of 700 kanals of irrigation/non-irrigation land. District administration needs Rs 998 lakhs immediate help for the repair of roads, Rs 916 lacs for irrigation and flood control and 30 lacs for school buildings.
On Thursday more than 500 electric poles and dozens of transformers have also been washed away in Rajouri district resulting in snapping of power supply to various areas including Rajouri city. Meanwhile, Army has deployed 85 columns of troops in flood-hit Jammu and Kashmir for undertaking search, rescue and relief operations and have rescued 2500 people so far.
Officials said that more columns of troops in various units and formations have been kept ready for operations to reach out to the affected people in Kashmir valley and parts of Jammu region. Army has deployed and pressed into service 85 columns of troops for undertaking a major search, rescue and relief operations in flood hit areas, said a defence official.
Of 85 columns, 60 columns have been deployed in Kashmir valley and 25 such columns in affected areas of Jammu region. Atleast 31 houses partially and fully damaged due to heavy rainfall in district Udhampur. Those persons whose houses suffered damages include Lal Din, Sita Ram, Gobind Ram, Kartar Singh, Sharif Mohammed, Nikka, Sawarn Singh, Baddi Singh, Babu Singh, Masu, Chunni Lal, Rishi Pal, Balwant Singh, Pramu, Subash Singh, Dayan Singh, Pram Singh, Goru Singh, Karnal Singh, Darshan Kumar, Gayan Chand, Hans Raj, Mohan Lal, Nasib Chand, Shakina, Das Raj, Shib Datt, Sudash Kumar, Him Raj, Sunil Datt, Pram Nath, son of Gori of Lohar Barmin and Nek Ram.
In Kathua distict, 55 persons were rescued from flooded Ujh River in Rajbagh 3 persons were rescued at Kore Punnu in Hiranagar and 3 in Billawar. District Red Cross Society established a relief camp for 55 rescued persons at Rajbagh where SDM Hiranagar and SHO Rajbagh camped for assistance to families. Ration, Biscuits, Pre-cooked foods, medicines, safe drinking water and other facilities were made available at the camp.
As many as 41 houses were damaged partially and 10 houses fully. Relief has been rushed to affected areas by the district administration and arrangements made for civil supplies and essential services. Kishtwar police in collaboration with civil administration have launched rescue operations at number of places. Three families have been shifted from Sliding area of Painaalla to Thatri by Tehsildaar Drabshalla and a police party lead by PSI Vishav Partap.
Similarly a Bhaderwah bound marriage party of one Subash Chander of Seri bazaar Bhaderwah was rescued from a landslide near Patshalla and we're taken to a safer place at Kewa by a police party lead by ICPP Jwalapur S.I Rakesh Roshan. In Padyarna, police party lead by S.I Jagdish Parihaar along with Tehsildaar Nagseni rescued affected families from sliding areas of Kukera, Ajna, Sergam and Ahlan villages. Further, in chatru and padder areas, civil administration alongwith police have evacuated families living along river embankments.
