Electronic Voting machines from Gujarat | Wani, Bhim train guns at EC | | Rustam
JAMMU, Sep 5: Provincial president of NC Nasir Aslam Wani, who the other day kicked opponents of NC working president and J&K CM Omar Abdullah at the party workers' convention at Ganderbal, has trained guns at Election Commission (EC). He has denounced its decision to get electronic voting machines from Gujarat for assembly elections in J&K. He has alleged that this decision was unfair as it has created apprehensions about the fairness of upcoming elections in the state. "Why only EVMs from Gujarat when there are other states in the country?," he asked the EC. A report said: "The reported move of the ECI of getting EVMs from BJP-ruled state has created apprehensions in view of the 'Mission 44+' launched by the BJP in the state" and his whole refrain was that the EC must withdraw its decision to ensure free and fair poll in the state". JKNPP chief patron Bhim Singh, who issues statement everyday on issues and non-issues to remain in limelight in J&K, has also opposed the reported move of the EC to get EVMs from Gujarat for assembly elections in J&K. In fact, he was the first person to do so. He wrote a letter to the EC on August 20 asking it to reconsider its decision. The EC replied his letter on August 28. Not satisfied with the reply, Bhim Singh again wrote a letter to it three days back and questioned its decision. He not only opposed the decision of the EC, but also asked it explain as to why "15000 EVMs are being sent to J&K where there are only 10015 polling stations". Both Wani and Bhim have put forth silly and untenable arguments. The EC is the custodian of EVMs and it has been manufactured by firms of repute and not by the BJP. Their opposition to the reported move only suggested that the BJP won the election in Gujarat by installing EVMs at polling stations which were designed to help the BJP. It's a bogus suggestion. It appears that a sense of defeat has gripped the leadership of both the parties and, hence, a senseless opposition to the reported move of the EC to get EVMs from Gujrat for J&K polls. As for the issue of number of voting machines being sent to J&K, less said the better. The EC sends more EVMs as compared to the number of polling booths to ensure replacement of those who go out of order when the voting is on. It is a normal practice. By questioning the EC's move, Wani and Bhim have only created an impression that their parties are standing on a slippery wicket. |
