Floods lead to devastation, destruction across Kashmir valley; thousands continue to be trapped
Death toll reaches 13 as 7 more people fall prey to nature's fury

SRINAGAR, Sept 5: With seven more deaths the flood fury continues to be ominous in Kashmir valley as scores of villages and localities continue to be submerged with the rescue teams yet to reach the affected people living in these villages and localities.
At the same time all the major rivers, streams, and nullahs continue to flow above the danger mark across the valley. The over flowing of the water bodies is being viewed as a serious concern with the experts saying that it would take days together before the situation turns normal.
Tragedy struck in the Arizal village of Central Kashmir's Budgam district when three persons were washed away by gushing waters of a stream that was flowing with full speed.
Reports said that a middle aged man was washed away by spilled over water of a stream while he was walking on an embankment. Seeing his father being washed away the son of the middle aged man plunged into the stream to rescue his father. However, he too was washed away. After witnessing that his father and brother have been washed away second son of the middle aged man also took a plunge in the stream in order to save both of them. But he too got washed away.
In this district scores of villages have suffered heavy losses due to the flood. In areas like Narbal, Kawoosa, Magam, Kanthpora, Arizal, Soibugh, Beerwah, Chadoora, Banhar, Batpora, Wathoora and others the flood has caused huge destruction. Water has seeped into the houses in these areas and the situation is extremely grim.
In the Tosa Maidan and Kadlabal areas of this district more than 500 persons are believed to be trapped with the administration yet to reach them to provide relief. Some of the bridges in the district including the Chadoora bridge were washed away by flood.
In South Kashmir's Kulgam district two persons died when the bridge they were walking on got washed away by the gushing waters of a stream that was flowing at a full speed. The incident took place in the Brazlu village and the two bodies are yet to be recovered.
In this district hundreds of people continue to be trapped in flood with the rescue teams yet to reach them. At the same time the district administration with the help of police and army evacuated hundreds of people who got trapped in the flood in the different villages.
A police official said that in the Kokernag are of Anantnag also in South Kashmir, 14 families comprising of 96 family members were rescued at Mati Bidhar and have been shifted to safer places. The police official said that about 400 people have been rescued by Police Rajpora Shopian from villages Rakh Litter, Wachi and Zainapora along with their cattle and have been shifted to safer places.
A government official said that 2,000 civilians were rescued in the villages in the South Kashmir districts of Anantnag, Pulwama, Shopian and Kulgam. The official said that 1,500 civilians continue to be trapped in these districts. He said 41 villages continue be under water in the Shopian district.
In North Kashmir's Tangmarg area one person lost his life after suffering a massive heart attack. The civilian could not bear the situation under which the flood water entered his house. He collapsed and was taken to hospital only to be pronounced as dead. His death sent shock waves in the entire area.
In Central Kashmir's Ganderbal district a person lost his life after being electrocuted. The civilian was busy in rescue operation when he was hit by a live wire. His tragic death sent shock waves in the entire locality. The Indus river falling through the Ganderbal and Kangan is flowing above the danger mark.
In the summer capital of the state thousands of people living in dozens of localities are facing numerous difficulties since the water has seeped into their houses. The flood water has entered the houses located in the Hamdaniya Colony Bemina, Boatman Colony Bemina, Old Barzulla, Baghat, Natipora, Chanapora, Mehjoor Nagar, Padshahi Bagh, Kursoo Rajbagh, Pantha Chowk, Sempora, Eidgah, Firdous Colony and many other areas.
Reports said that water has seeped up to the level of second floor in majority of the flood affected areas. As a result of this the people have either shifted to the top floor of their house or moved to their relatives' houses located in areas that have not been affected by the flood so far. However, as they have left behind their belongings these people are worried about the fate of their assets.
City hospitals like Bone and Joints Hospital, Barzulla and Jhelum Valley Medical College, Bemina continue to be inundated with the water seeping in the premises. Some of the patients at the Barzulla hospital have been shifted to Kashmir Nursing Home at Gupkar while as some others have been shifted to the first floor. On the other hand patients at the Bemina hospital have been shifted to the first floor.
People of the Pantha Chowk and Sempora areas in the outskirts of city protested against the 'indifference' of the state government. The residents of these areas alleged that nobody from the state government has come forward to help despite the fact that they have been badly hit by the flood. The residents scuttled the move of three coalition ministers to visit South Kashmir by stopping their cavalcade.
Reports said that at least six vital bridges were damaged in North Kashmir due to flashfloods caused by incessant rains. The Bungergund bridge connecting Trehgam with Ramahal and Shaloora Bridge connecting scores of villages of Kralpora and Ramhal, collapsed due to flashfloods. Floods also damaged some residential houses in Dar Mohalla Ridi in Chowkibal besides causing damage to Shartwari Macadam Plant sources said.
The low-lying areas of Kupwara and Handwara like Bungergund, Paddargund, Baba Gund, Hanjipora, Adoora (Langate), Bramri, Khonabal (Handwara), Balipra, Awuthkul, Shah Mohalla Gund Momen, Wodhpora, Drugmulla Chak, Mattipora, Shartiwari and several other localities were inundated as Nallah Pohru, Nallah Kehmil and Mawar Nallahs were flowing above the danger mark.
Meanwhile flood waters and torrential rains wreaked havoc to the standing crops of paddy and maize in different areas of the district. Several areas in Pattan Thesil including Kumgamdara, Mehrajpora, Hanjiwera, Tantray Mohalla, Payeen, Ghat Gopalan, Trikolbal, and Mundari villages were submerged in water.
At the same time several areas in Sopore town including, Tarzoo, Haigam, Haritara and Ambarpor are submerged due to flash floods. Three houses and a hospital also suffered damage after a stream in the area breached near Bela Slamabad this afternoon.
Three main bridges, Kachew Muqam, Wagoora, and Shrakwara Vizer, hundreds of Kanals of land and worth crores of property were damaged by flood in wagoora area of sangrama constituency, people of area are crying for help however administration has failed to provide any flood relief to the victims of an area.
Around 10 houses, six mud houses, two shops, one vehicle one Army Bridge was damaged at the Qazi Naag Bijhama Nallah in Baramulla district. Several parts of north Kashmir's Baramulla district are witnessing landslides, posing threat to life and property. Landslides hit Audoora and Nowshehra areas this morning, triggering fear among people.
Meanwhile a rescue team headed by Sub Divisional Magistrate (SDM) Sopore rescued 30 persons from Tarazoo and 35 persons from Hygam area of Sopore town on Friday.
At the same time a police official said that the whole Kanyari village consisting of about 150 families has been shifted to degree college Sumbal. Vehicles of 13-RR and police are being used in the rescue operation.
The official said that police and army launched a rescue operation at Hygam where water depth was about seven feet. Boats were pressed into the service and about 300 men, women and children were rescued in this rescue operation. In Handwara, over 20 families from village Check Audoora and Kutlari have been shifted to safer areas by police.
