SRINAGAR, Sept 5: As the flood fury created havoc in Kashmir region for the third consecutive day today, chaos and confusion prevailed in civil lines here as roads remained water logged and Jhelum kept on flowing at all time high.
The worst hit was Barzulla area in civil lines as most houses remained inundated with the water which had seeped in two days ago. " No one has come to ascertain how we are managing," said a resident of Rawalpora Barzulla.
Situation was no different in other low lying areas, including Hamdania colony, Bemina, Natipora and Chanapora.
Surprisingly, the areas which usually used to get submerged during floods have remained unaffected this time around.
The candidate of Awami Ithad Party for Amira Kadal constituency Zeeshan Pandit while talking to Early Times said, "It's for the first time in so many years that Barzulla area, including the Bone and Joint Hospital have been under water."
Pandit expressed dismay over what he termed as "lackadaisical attitude" of the officials. "No one seems accessible. People have been left to fend for themselves. It's unfortunate," he added.
Another politician while commenting on submerging Barzulla area said, "Bone and Joint hospital and areas around it are no one's vote bank, while as people living in Mehjoor Nagar, Lasjan, Soiteng and other areas are strong vote bank of the ruling National Conference," he said.
The politician claimed that NC led government has preferred to keep its vote bank intact by submerging the hospital and adjoining areas.
Many people in Barzulla and adjoining areas have abandoned their homes and have shifted to safer places. "We had no other choice other than to move out as we were feeling unsafe," said Farooq Ahmed of Rawatpora.
Mehjoor Nagar from the very beginning has been marked as the flood prone area whenever floods used to hit Srinagar city it used to be the first area to get submerged but this time around government preferred to ensure that this area remains safe. "With eyes on elections NC led government ensured that this area remains safe so that they can encash it during the election campaign," said a teacher.
Old Barzulla was the first area to get inundated as people of this area prefer to stay away from polls and they are considered to be staunch followers of Jamaat-i-Islami. "This area is of no use to the government that's why they cried breach and submerged it. Otherwise submerging hospital is the last resort," said an analyst.
Tension gripped Barzulla and adjoining areas again on Friday evening as Jehlum was roaring and there were rumours that government is planning to cut the bund again. "We are living under constant fear and have kept our fingers crossed," locals said.
