Double Standards: Omar silent on leakage of agenda of his cabinet meets
** But questions timing of Rajnath’s letter on KPs, its leakage to press

Early Times Report

Srinagar, Sept 7: When you expect others to be sincere with you, first of all you need to be sincere with yourself too. While questioning the timing of Union Home Minister Rajnath Singh's letter asking him to identify land for rehabilitation of Kashmiri Pandits in the valley, he forgot that his government too has been leaking in advance the agenda, which otherwise is supposed to be secret, of state cabinet meets to the local press.
Omar felt that the Centre should not have sent the letter at a time when the state was faced with worst ever crisis on account of floods triggered by heavy rains. He said so even when Rajnath had already made it clear that the process of despatching the letter was set in motion before the rains lashed the state.
But without getting into the nature of the letter and good intention behind it, he made a comment just to find faults with the Centre's way of functioning and deviate people's attention from the real issues facing J&K. But he would not show such a concern when the agenda documents of his cabinet meets are routinely being leaked to the press here. Surprisingly, he is wanting sincerity from the central leadership even when he himself needs to do a lot of home work on this account. Is it not logical on his part to find out the moles in his government who are in the habit of leaking "secret" agenda documents?
He had Friday last said at Magam in Budgam, Kashmir, "It is unfortunate that at a time when we are trying to save human lives, they are talking of land. We can talk about the land anytime."
"Today our responsibility is to save the lives of those suffering due to rains, then save their livestock, rehabilitate affected persons. Entire paddy fields have got damaged. Fruit in orchards has been destroyed. After tackling the situation, we will appropriately respond to the letter if it has been sent. We are here to stay and not going anywhere. It is not appropriate time to discuss such issue."
Omar also slammed the Union Home Minister for leaking the letter to media even before it has been received by him.
"I would have preferred that this letter should reach me first before discussion on it. I have always tried to issue statement only after the letter reaches the person to whom it is addressed by me. Here there is discussion on the letter even before reaching me. I don't think I need the letter now, all that has been written would be known the moment I turn on the television channel. I don't think I will look for the letter also."
As per the reports, Rajnath has also mentioned Government of India's commitment to facilitate return of Kashmiri migrants to the Valley and their proper rehabilitation.
BJP had in its poll manifesto promised that it would bring back Kashmiri Pandits to their homeland in a dignified manner. Also, the party is desperately trying to make its presence felt in the Valley in the assembly elections later this year.
Meanwhile, Omar confirmed his conversation over telephone with the Union Home Minister regarding latter's assurance of all help to the state in wake of the devastating flood in sixty years in the state.
"As soon as the scale of the problem became known, I received a call from the Union Home Minster. He assured us of any assistance that we require. NDRF forces were dispatched to the state, both to Jammu as well as Kashmir province. They have been deployed in the worst affected areas," he said.
"I have commitment from the Union Home Minister as to any sought of financial assistance that we require. We already have some money is State Disaster Relief Fund. The cabinet which met yesterday has already released Rs 10 crores each for immediate operation in Kashmir and Jammu province," he added.
Omar should also understand that if the Centre sent him a letter at a wrong time, as he has claimed, it also assured him of all possible help that the state requires. So instead of making issues out of no issues, he should prefer to focus on the real issues.
