Jammu hit by midnight tremor bluff | | | K Koushal
Jammu, Sept 7: Trauma of unprecedented floods yet to subside, Jammuites were hit by tremor bluff that drove half asleep people out of their homes in panic in the midnight. Scores of people ran out in open in panic after rumours were posted on social networking site Facebook and Whatsapp messenger about the possibility of an earthquake rocking the state last night. As the rumours spread, worried locals made frantic calls to their friends and relatives telling them to take precautionary measures. The people started coming out of their houses late night fearing a massive earthquake, a probable repeat of the 2005 earthquake, and spent night in open. "I got a call from a friend at midnight telling me that an earthquake is expected. He sounded very nervous but I told him not to panic as I had heard of no such warning on radio or television," said RohitCharak, a resident of Birpur in Samba district. "Reportedly some mischievous persons have spread rumours on the Facebook and social networking messenger Whatsapp about possibility of an earthquake at a particular time and place, which has created panic in some areas Jammu province. I am getting phone calls from people to confirm the authenticity of the prediction," Pardeep said. However, he said, there was nothing to panic as there was no mechanism to predict earthquakes. "It is necessary to inform everyone that earthquakes cannot be predicted. However, we should all take safety measures to reduce the damage whenever it occurs," said the message posted by Pardeep on the whatsapp. "By 4 am, all cars and scooters were rushing to the nearby parks and grounds and the atmosphere became lively but with a tinge of panic", said Rajkumar, a retired teacher who himself became a victim of rumour in the early morning and woke up his family members after getting a phone call from a friend. Some had even taken their jewellery and cash along with them. Because of a devastating earthquake on October 8, 2005 in the state in which scores of people died there was fear among the people and the extraordinary bad weather, unusual rains yesterday led to this panic, said Prof Venus. "It is deep rooted in our consciousness that it would definitely come one day and we would be nearest to the epicenter like a century ago", he said. Police and Civil administration too had tough time and later used loudspeakers to inform the concerned residents about the rumours. |
