Azad rubbing salt on wounds of people, undermining Army's role | Elections and relief work | | Rustam
JAMMU, Sept 29: Senior Congress man and Leader of Opposition in Rajya Sabha Ghulam Nabi Azad, who was rejected by the people of Kathua-Udhampur-Doda Lok Sabha constituency in the just held general elections, is rubbing salt on the wounds of the flood-affected people both in Jammu province and Kashmir Valley and undermining the role of the Army and other agencies in the ongoing relief and rehabilitation work. On the one hand, he is demanding elections to the Assembly on due dates and on the other, seeking to create an impression that it was the local Kashmiri youth and not the Army, Air Force, Navy, CRPF, BSP and NDRF who rescued the trapped people in the marooned Valley. Only the other day, Azad reiterated that Assembly elections in the state must be held on due dates and asserted that 80 per cent people trapped in the floods in the Valley were rescued by the local youth. "We all must salute the courage of youth who risked their lives, made temporary boats and went into the flood waters to save people in thousands. Besides, NDRF also did a remarkable job but the courage displayed by the youth is laudable," he said. Earlier, Azad had done a compete U-turn and accused the Army and others of rescuing only VIPs, a charge rebutted by NC working president and Chief Minister Omar Abdullah. Omar Abdullah had lambasted all those who were carrying on misinformation campaign to create ill-will between the common Kashmiri Muslims and the army and other agencies involved in the rescue and relief operations. He cited figures to demolish Azad and others of his ilk and commended the role of the Government of India and Army, Air Force, Navy, CRPF, BSF and NDRF. It appears that Azad has joined that camp in Kashmir which hates the rise of a situation in the Valley that induces the common Kashmiri Muslims speak high of the Indian Army. It must be kept in mind that had the Army, Air Force, Navy, CRPF, BSP and NDRF not acted on time braving all odds, many in the marooned valley had perished - a fact that is being appreciated by many Kashmiri Muslims. Azad wants the Election Commission to hold assembly elections on due dates. It is obvious that he has turned extremely insensitive. According to official figures, more than two million people have suffered one way or the other because of floods and many have been rendered homeless and jobless. They need relief and rehabilitation, but Azad would want the Election Commission to ignore the miseries and difficulties of the flood-affected people because he perhaps feels that people would vote for the Congress party in the upcoming assembly elections. That he is insisting on polls on due dates and overlooking the miserable plight of lakhs of the flood-affected people only establishes that he is not a responsible political leader. The people are watching with vigilance what Azad and other so-called leaders have been doing after the floods ravaged Jammu and Valley and they would surely teach them a lesson as and when the assembly elections are held in the state. |
