Elano beat me at my own game: Zico | | | Panaji, Oct 16: "Forca Goa, Forca Goa!" The chants reverberated in the nearly packed Nehru stadium at Fatorda; it made Zico "emotional" too. But the cheers were not enough to help the home team garner their first points in the Indian Super League on Wednesday. ISL's most ex-pensive manager and FC Goa head coach, Zico, has the defence to blame. "Our defence did not really move in line with the strikers. We fought till the end. But football is this way only," said Zico at the post match press conference. The Brazilian legend hailed Elano for his breath-taking free-kick which put the visitors two goals ahead in the first-half itself. "I know him since he was 16. I used to tell him to stay in his position while taking free-kicks. Today he beat me and my team following my tactics," he said. Zico lashed out at Marco Materazzi's team for wasting time in the middle. "They have a very experienced team and what they showcased today was a very strong act. But it seems they liked faking injuries and wasting time. It was clear their team didn't want to play after taking the lead," said Zico, who felt fielding Ranti Martins in the second half was a right move though he missed two open chances. "I didn't have much option. I had only Tolgay Ozbey and Ranti. He tried his best but the opposition defence was all over," he added. Balwant Singh, who became the first Indian to score this season felt it is his hardwork that finally paid off. "It's a great feeling that I got a chance to play alongside foreign strikers. And I'm glad I scored on receiving an opportunity," he said. Chennai coach Materazzi seemed to be in a jovial mood as he dismissed alle-gations of throttling Pires with rough tackles. "Pires should know that it's football. And at the end of 90 minutes if you don't play it properly, you are finished," he said. "We started just 20 days ago. I'm thankful to Balwant and Elano for this wonderful result," he signed off. |
