Jammu, Oct 16: Krishi Vigyan Kendra (KVK) RS Pura, SKUAST-J organized a field day on ornamental fish farming at the pond of Girdhari Lal at village Chak Bhagwana, Bisnah to develop the entrepreneurship among the farmers. The motive of organizing field day was to highlight the potential of ornamental fish culture in the state against the traditional fish culture for food. This field day was first of its kind in the state to show the potential of ornamental fish farming. On this occasion Prem Kumar, Subject matter Specialist (Fisheries) of KVK Jammu informed that currently about 280 exotic species and about 100 indigenous species of ornamental fish are being produced and traded. India's share in ornamental fish export is only 1% of the total traded. The domestic market is worth around Rs 500 million and the demand is increasing at 20% annually. Before KVK intervention, not a single farmer was doing ornamental fish culture. He emphasized the revenue potential of ornamental fish is more because ornamental fishes fetches more price even at small sizes in comparison to food fishes which needed to be big in size which take more time. The climatic condition of Jammu is very suitable for the culture and breeding of Koi carp. Keeping in view, the seeds of Koi carp were introduced into the pond of Girdhari Lal who dared to be first farmer of the state to adopt it. |
