Department of English of CUJ to organize National Seminar on Oct 28

Jammu, Oct 16: The Department of English and Comparative Literature, Central University of Jammu is going to organize a one day national seminar entitled "Dowry Murder: Gender- Prejudiced Practices in India Today" on October 28.
The seminar is being organized to deliberate on gender imbalanced practices rampant in contemporary India with a special focus on dowry -related harassment in middle- class homes in Northern India.
At the same time the national seminar proposes an examination of seminal literary and cultural texts representing dowry related harassment among Indians at home and in the world (in diaspora).
This National Seminar is not simply geared towards theoretical deliberations but a more practical, hands-on sensitization of students and faculty regarding the need to embrace gender enabled practices and create gender equity in India in particular and South Asian cultures in general.
The seminar will be the first among several such programmes that the Department of English, wishes to organize and may justifiably lead to the formation of a Centre for Women Studies in the Central University of Jammu.
Vice Chancellor of University will be the chief guest on the occasion while eminent academicians including Prof. Chandra Mohan (Retd. Prof of English, Delhi University, and General Secretary Comparative Literature of India); Prof. Ved Kumari Ghai (Retd Prof. of Sanskrit, Jammu University and Padmashree awardee); Prof. Savita Nayyar (Prof. Dept of Law Jammu University); Prof. Nilu Sharma (Director Women's Studies Centre Jammu University); Dr. Vandana Sharma (Director School of Languages, SMVD University, Katra; Prof. Nandini Bhattacharya (Prof and Head Central University of Jammu) and Dr. M.A.A. Farooq (Assistant Prof.CUJ) will read their research papers.
The afternoon session will have a reading of students' papers, film shows, poster and slogan-writing contests, rendition of dowry-related songs, performance of skits, and so forth.
The Department of English has invited all the members of Jammu civil society to participate and support the seminar.
