PDP's aggressive campaign in Doda belt gives sleepless nights to Cong | | | Early Times Report
Jammu, Oct 27: Whirlwind tour of senior Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) leaders to the erstwhile Doda district has given sleepless nights to the Congress leadership because PDP leaders have received encouraging response during their week-long tour. After virtually "capturing" the ethnically divided border districts of Poonch and Rajouri, the PDP is now targeting the mountainous erstwhile Doda district comprised of six assembly segments which party is exploring the possibility of winning some seats. PDP patron and ex-Chief Minister Mufti Mohammad Sayeed had deputed three senior leaders namely Lok Sabha member from Srinagar segment Tariq Hamid Karra, leader of opposition in the Assembly Abdul Rehman Veeri and former Minister Peer Mohammad Hussain. Tariq Hamid Karra is new "poster boy" of PDP because Karra has created history by defeating National Conference stalwart from Srinagar Parliamentary segment which was earlier considered as bastion of NC. PDP team started its tour from Banihal and concluded week long campaign trail at Chatroo which is part of the Inderwal assembly segment. During their weeklong tour PDP leaders covered all six assembly segments and addressed public meetings as well as convention of party workers. Congress is a worried because in 2008 assembly elections party had won five out of total six segment of this belt and had virtually "gifted" the six seat of Kishtwar to the NC. But the way PDP is trying to make inroads in this belt is matter of serious concern for the Congress. On the one hand, some Congress MLAs in this belt are facing anti-incumbency due to their failure to address peoples' grievances while on the other hand PDP has started an aggressive campaign in this mountainous region. Furthermore, BJP has also started aggressive campaign to consolidate Hindu votes of erstwhile Doda district. Six seats of erstwhile Doda districts are very crucial for Congress to retain its present tally because in Jammu, Samba, Kathua and Udhampur districts party had performed very badly in the recently held Parliamentary elections and it is unlikely that party would improve its position. |
