JU Council: Guv leaves VC JU in lurch, withholds decision to grant extension | | | Abodh Sharma JAMMU, Oct 27: In an obvious bid to play safe ahead of Assembly elections for which the notification has already been issued, Governor N N Vohra chose not to grant extension to the Vice Chancellor of the University of Jammu Prof. MP Singh Ishar, even though the Pro Chancellor and the Chief Minister Omar Abdullah had reportedly approved the proposal to grant another term to the incumbent over three weeks back. The extension was expected to be granted today during the meeting of the University Council, but the Chancellor who chairs the Council chose to defer the decision, leaving the VC in lurch. Highly placed sources opined that with new State Government likely to be instituted in a couple of months and rumours of N N Vohra's recall ripe, the Chancellor chose to play safe by deciding to withhold the decision. Meanwhile, the indecision would mean an administrative vacuum in the JU as Prof. MP Singh Ishar is due for superannuation in November 2014 eventhough his term as the Vice Chancellor of JU terminates on January 27, 2015. However, highly placed sources in the JU divulge that Prof. Ishar has been offered an extension by his parent university, the Guru Nanak Dev University Amritsar and he might consider the offer if uncertainty over his extension prevailed. It is pertinent to mention here that while Prof. Ishar has been pushed into uncertainty despite his loyalty and devotion, Vice Chancellor Kashmir University, Prof. Talat was granted extension by the Chancellor previously, but he chose to accept the headship of Aligarh Muslim University that he was offered. |
