BJP's poll providence runs viral on WhatsApp | | | Kunal Shrivatsa JAMMU, Oct 27: For lakhs of smartphone users, social media sites like WhatsApp have become a strong medium to stay connected with their friends, relatives and close ones but of late such a platform has turned into a breeding ground for rumour mongers particularly those who have a stake or interest in state politics viz-a-viz the upcoming Assembly polls. The trend of circulating messages containing prospective candidates for contesting the Assembly polls particularly from Bharatiya Janta Party (BJP) is again doing the rounds in social media circles ever since the schedule of election was announced on Saturday evening. The sudden surge in WhatsApp messages mentioning the names of BJP candidates had come to an abrupt halt due to incessant rains and floods last month which almost brought the political activity to a standstill. If one list of BJP candidates for 14 Assembly constituencies appears in the morning, the other set of 27 BJP candidates' names emerged in the evening for different Assembly segments of Jammu region. However, the interesting aspect of both the lists was that whosoever circulated them possesses a great imagination as names of the candidates in some of the constituencies had a slight variation on one hand and even some names of leaders representing other political parties who have not yet formally joined the saffron party. Moreover, one message even claimed that BJP General Secretary in presence of BJP J&K Incharge Avinash Rai Khanna and State BJP President Jugal Kishore Sharma announced the names at party headquarter in New Delhi. In the first list disseminated on social media, the BJP candidate from Jammu East was senior leader Ashok Khajuria while the other one gave the mandate to Yudhveer Sethi. Similarly, for the Gandhi Nagar segment, the WhatsApp message had two different names- Sunil Sethi and Aditi Sharma. The two lists vary as far as seven other Assembly constituencies of Raipur-Domana, Suchetgarh, Basohli, Chhamb (Khour), Akhnoor, RS Pura and Marh are concerned. Bharat Bhushan Bodhi and Bali Bhagat were mentioned as BJP candidates from Raipur-Domana while Sham Choudhary and RS Chib, who is a senior Congress leader, from Suchetgarh, Jagdish Raj Sapolia and Choudhary Lal Singh from Basohli, Chaman Lal Kanathia and Dr Krishan Lal from Chhamb (Khour), Puran Sharma and Dr Suresh Ajay Magotra from Akhnoor, Gharu Ram Bhagat and Dr Gagan Bhagat from RS Pura and Sukhnandan Choudhary and Kamal Choudhary from Marh have been shown as BJP nominees in the two lists. Interestingly, even as no official announcement was made by the BJP on the candidatures, a ticket hopeful's close associate, who picked up phone call on his behalf when contacted by Early Times, said in affirmation that he has been chosen for the party mandate from an Assembly constituency (name withheld for valid reasons) in Udhampur District. Meanwhile, when contacted the State BJP's spokesperson Balbir Ram Rattan rubbished the claims made by some anonymous persons in WhatsApp messages that party has finalized few names for the Assembly elections. "BJP has not come out with any list of candidates…No official declaration has been made…The names are yet to be finalized…The names being circulated in social media is figment of imagination of some unscrupulous elements who have vested interests and are pursuing their own personal agenda…BJP has nothing to do with it," said Balbir Ram. |
